asus-eee-pc-900According to news published today at Products Reviews .NET, Asus is releasing a version of its Eee PC 900 using a Celeron M processor. What happened here? Did Asus find that the new Atom or the previous A110 was not sufficient enough to bring a decent performance to this machine which will ship using Windows XP?

The original Asus Eee PC was a great little UMPC, however many of us knew that this was just a teaser until the launch of the Asus Eee PC 900. We thought that this slighter larger model would be a huge improvement on the previous model however, I was a little shocked to learn that they would still be using the 900MHz Celeron M processor.

If you check the title of my comment you are going to notice that I said ULPC and not UMPC. ULPC is a new name that is starting to be used by Microsoft: Ultra Lite PC. In another words, what was used to be known by Subnotebook. Please, do not confuse this with ULCPC, which means Ultra Low Cost PC. Wink

The price of this ULPC will be around 500 to 650 dollars and there is not words of when or if it will be sold in USA.

  • The problem is though.. as features, processors and (inevitably) cost rise these devices are becoming closer to the market section that traditional laptops occupy.

When the EEEPC was first launched it was hailed as the $199 notebook. And we were told that in the UK it was going to be at a price equivelent to that and not the £199 mark.

Well today if I want one I'm paying about £249 for the EEEPC and I can buy an HP laptop with 2GB of Ram for £299.

Now I know that the HP is bigger and heavier.... but most people if given the choice between the 2 low cost laptops will go for the HP every time.

If The EEEPC actually came in at the original £100 price mark I may well have bought 2, but as it is I think this machine and its successor have missed the market they originally went for.

A number of other companies are coming out with competing devices, like Acer and HP, and Asus wants to get the Eee PC 900 on the market first. The Intel Atom processor won't be avalable for another month or so, and Asus decided to not wait. So it's going to launch this UMPC with a Celeron at first, and later switch to the Atom.
