It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

carphone It wasn’t too long ago that Cingular was making a bid at a European Cell Provider, I think it was Orange, but that never went through. It looked to me like Cingular was trying to take over the world and not just the USA. Now Cingular is AT&T.

Well, Carphone Warehouse is talking about opening up stores in the US. I will admit, being that I am not in Europe, I know very little about this company. I do know that they sold the iPhone when it was launched over there.

According to Electronista, Carphone Warehouse is planning to open 1,000 stores in the US. That is one hell of an invasion. Good luck.

Europe’s Carphone Warehouse is coming to the US, reports say. The company is an independent cellphone vendor, and has some 2,300 stores scattered throughout European countries. It is now planning to open almost 1,000 stores in America, thanks to a partnership with big-box retailer Best Buy, which owns a 3 percent stake in Carphone. Some of these will be boutiques within Best Buy shops, but others will operate separately in different locations. The first American outlets should launch later this year.

With Best Buy backing this, they should stand a chance. I think Circuit City has done a great deal for Verizon.

  • Of all the (dramatically dwindling number of) independent resellers in the UK Market place, CPW are probably the top dog. It will be interesting to see how they do in the US where the market for handsets is nowhere near as competitive as it is here.

Vodafone did pull out in late 2006 for new contracts, but have continued to allow contract renewals and sell Vodafone pay as you go phones through CW. I believe Carphone Warehouse's Talk Mobile service - http://www.talkmobile.co.uk/home.php - is also powered via Vodafone's network.
  • Carphone Warehouse no longer sell all of the carriers under one roof - Vodafone pulled out a while ago.

Their reputation has taken a knock over the last 12 months in the UK, with the botched introduction of their phone and broadband service, TalkTalk. Still, they are a major player, and competition is always good for consumers, so people in the US can see this as a good thing.

    Hi Chris

Carphone Warehouse started as a UK company selling carphones. They're now a major high street retailer across the UK (and in 11 European countries). Unlike a carrier store, say like an AT&T store or a Verizon store, Carphone Warehouse sell phones from all of the major carriers under one roof, so customers can pick from different phone and different carrier tariffs in one store. They were one of only 2 places in the UK (outside of Apple) where you could get the iPhone, and they're currently running with an exclusive on the pink BlackBerry Pearl.

They're a company listed on the UK Stock Exchange, so a pretty big deal in Europe. If they're expanding to the U.S. then it could bring additional choice to U.S. cellphone customers.
