Google Maps Gets An Update, But What Did They Do?

closeThis post was published 1 year 7 months 20 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

pc_capture66 Saw this over at MyTodayScreen.com that Google Maps has got a new update when he it fired up. I am more of a Microsoft Live Search loyalist, but I went ahead and took  a look, and it does appear that Google has updated from version 2.0.0.12 to 2.0.1.28. So what does this mean? I have no idea! I couldn’t find anything new with it either. However, the program upon installing was quite a bit larger than the previous version. This new Version is 1063 KB. I seen to remember the old version being about half that size installed. If you come up with a change log or what they updated, let us know! I will say that this new version gets quite a bit closer using Locations than the old version did.

To download new Version 2.0.1.28 of Google Maps, just CLICK HERE and enter you cell phone number and Google will send you a text with the download link. Or point your browser to http://mobile.google.com to download via an Internet connection.

Some Screen Shots of the install after the break. Enjoy!

The navigation mode has changed a bit... better turn notifications and it appears to prefetch map data around the displayed area in anticipation of movement rather than constantly filling in the blanks. I suspect that there's a lot of prefetching going on which is facilitating the improved zoom function as well.

Unfortunately it still shuts down if a data connection is lost. $@#% This makes it *much* less useful for road trips. Note that MS Live Search does not self
destruct when over the air (OTA) data isn’t available. If you’re on a route, MSLS keeps plotting your GPS coords against the route and navigating to the
    destination.
  • Thanks Matt. It does seem faster to me also. I thought the accuracy was better too. I will say this, Google has always put me closer to the exact spot than Windows Live Search ever has. For that reason I use Google Maps when I am fishing or mountain biking in the woods.

It seems like the overall appearance of the maps is better, like maybe a higher resolution, and the drawing seems it might be faster, like when dragging to a new area. Also when zooming in and out, it instantly snaps to the new level, rather than the transition of zooming in or out. And a double-tap centers and zooms in... don't think it did that before.

    Thanks for the tip!
