A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Label a Flash Drive

With so many flash drives I often rename them to make using them a little easier but I was always sort of bored with the way it looked when it came up on the screen.  It was never “snappy” but today that all changed with a tip that Jill submitted to Lifehacker.  It is a pretty simple process and you can make a special eye-catching custom icon to display.

How do you do it?  Simple!

Create a new text file in Notepad, type the word:

[autorun]

Now save it to the root directory of your Thumbdrive as “autorun.inf”.

I chose my Experience Mobility Lighthouse for my personal items and the Power Button Chris uses on Mobilitysite and Aximsite for items I am writing.  After I made and saved my icon, I copied the icon to the root directory of my thumb drive and renamed it mobilitysite.ico.

Then I opened the autorun.inf file and added this text:

icon = .mobilitysite.ico
label=http://mobilitysite.com

(Clearly you can add what you want for your label such as your name and your cell number the above text.)

Now you can save the file and marked it “read only” and hide it (just to avoid people from inadvertently deleting it.)

That is it!  Unplug the device and reinsert and it will look like this.

So you like it and now you want to make your own special icon.  That is easy too!  Head over to favicon.cc and create your own.  It’s simple and you will love what you made!

    I do a little bit more than that for a few of mine..

    [Autorun]
    Open=PortableAppsPortableAppsMenuPortableAppsMenu.exe
    Action=Start PortableApps
    Icon=PortableAppsPortableAppsMenuPortableAppsMenu.exe
    Label=PortableApps
