November 7, 2009 – 9:36 pm | Comments

A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Menneisyys’ Touch Browser Review

Posted by Chris Leckness on April 21, 2008 – 8:49 am
closeThis post was published 1 year 6 months 19 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

Menneisyys is not technically part of the “team” here, but he’s been around quite some time and he shares some really technical reviews across the entire Windows Mobile Community. I wish I would have had a chance to meet him in person at the MVP Summit last week, but maybe next time.

Anyhow, last week I posted some news about another browser for Windows Mobile. Well, now we know it’s really not a standalone browsers. It sits on top of Pocket Internet Explorer. Ruh Roh. Menneisyys shares his review in the forums. This should hold you off until Ksong finishes his review.

Web browsing is one of the major application areas of portable devices – no wonder the iPhone is also Web-centric with its excellent Safari browser.

The “accelerated” scrolling mode of Safari is widely copied in the Windows Mobile world. The latest title to support this kind of screen dragging mode is Touch Browser by Makayama available for purchase and, now, trial download HERE (manual HERE).

It’s an external wrapper to Internet Explorer Mobile (IEM), just like Webby and unlike traditional IEM plug-ins like Spb Pocket Plus, PIEPlus and MultiIE. This also means it has some of the inherent problems common to all these solutions; more on this later.

Thanks for the kind words :)

BTW, I'm coming to Barcelona this February too.

Bought it before there was a trial version... Btw...thanks NOT to handango who initially offered a "trial" download that was actually just a video-demo! Nasty that!!!!

the touchbrowser is a joke! It's in its current state at best a dodgy alpha release! So buggy, so lacking of standard features: wants a site starts loading you cannot stop it - what if you hit a wrong link? No history, no cache...no option to clean privacy data! The half-baked keyboard overrides/disables the built-in onscreen keyboard...but heck: everytime you rotate to landscape on my tytn to use slide-out keyboard the app freezes...
Rendering: lol, the tiny google mobile site sits on a square mile of white space...you see bits when the site finished loading and then you scroll forever through whiteness to find the rest!!!
Opera mini works fine on my tytn, it's free, I can screen drag with my finger, and it doesn't load a tiny forum homepage at 300+ kb... Try cnn on touchbrowser? Hahaha...even at 3g speed it takes, well, I don't know...after 3 minutes of blank loading screen, I gave up....
I rate makayama's product fraudulent... i haven't looked at their site in a couple of days, but initially at least there was zero indication that it's just a pie add-on!!!!! They also claim desktop browsing, but their default google search is google-mobile!!!!
    Rip-off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up on this Menneisyys. A true caveat emptor for the time being!

Big mistake on my part. I bought this browser and their iphone look-a-like launcher at the same time. I thought maybe they had something. Both of the programs are just junk! Do not even bother. I'm kicking myself now.
