A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

There was an interesting review that Jonathan Bray did over at TrustedReviews on the MWg Zinc II -Windows Mobile 6.1 Smartphone that you might like reading. With the recent announcement of the update tp Microsoft’s mobile platform, there is a very definite thirst to see just what it is like, how well it will perform and of course if you will decide to get it.  Based on Jon’s comments, he like the interface improvements – such as the panel-based Today screen enhancements. So it appears as if the folks at MWg  loaned Jon a pre-production version of the Zinc II and he is sharing the experience with you.

What are his final thoughts?

While the 6.1 update to Windows Mobile, in its Professional version at least, is a bit of a disappointment from an ease of use perspective, the apparent improvements in speed should not be underestimated. The MWg Zinc II’s own UI enhancements, superb touchscreen, compact dimensions, excellent engineering and all-encompassing feature set also make this a handset worth considering in its own right.

In fact the Zinc II’s sheer speed, coupled with a decent alternative browser such as Opera Mini 4.1 makes this a serious rival to the still-superb HTC TyTN II; if the keyboard had been better, it could have outstripped it.

Due to a TON of confusion, a lot of people believe that the today screen has been changed to the cool panel effect as seen in most of the videos on the web. This is only half true. And I say 'half true' because there are two versions of windows mobile, and only one of them gets this neat little feature. And it's not WM6.1 professional. The standard edition gets the new awesome interface. Unfortunately, it hasn't been/can't be ported to the professional edition because it lack touch screen support. So for all of you drooling to get a cool touch device with a slick home screen, you're going to have to get something non-touch.

Not to knock the original poster though, I just noticed the thread was about the new mwg device and it's wm6.1 professional, meaning touch screen, meaning no panels on the home screen. Sorry for the let-down. :-(
