November 7, 2009 – 9:36 pm | Comments

A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Several Mobilitysite Changes Now in Place

under_construction_large So, some feedback we have received over the last month or so is that we were pushing down the original content our guys are putting out there so fast with all the postings here that they weren’t getting proper exposure to all the readers. That said, I have made some serious site changes to try to enhance such content.

The 1st thing was put in place with the new layout that I am sure many of you have seen already. This is the main block just above the most recent blog posts. This section has seven tabs highlighting the last six items in featured content categories. These include recent reviews, podcasts, videos, contests, etc… Some older browsers have a problem with the tabs, but it won’t affect them where they can’t at least see the newest posts.

The other 2 changes were implemented more recently. I added a nice rotation of featured content at the top of the right column. This will give quick links to some of the featured content we have here. In effort to reduce clutter, I have also placed polls, recent comments, recent forum posts, our blog roll, and category clouds into a tabbed side bar format. This puts more info neatly in place just a mouse click away.

Some of these dynamic methods require a good deal of scripting and I am concerned about overall usability. I have tested them in Firefox and Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and they work great. Please take time to answer the following poll. If there is a problem, make sure to leave a comment with your browser info and what seems to not work. Thanks.

How are the Mobilitysite Enhancements working for you?

I have removed some of the social things too. That Mybloglog widget is really cool, but it hindered load times so badly that I felt the need to remove it.

Also make sure to check out the new comment system we put in place a couple weeks ago. Add your avatar so we can put a face to the names. :)

Last, but not least, we have made it where press releases we publish from the companies we cover don’t show on the main page in their entirety. They are now in the side bar as a linked title. They will still show up in your RSS feed though. Many of the releases we post are put online quite quickly and although this is not original content, it’s news that those that like to soak up Mobility News want to know about.

Thanks for reading! I hope the changes make your onsite experience better.

For me, I have to open the permalink for the article for the poll vote to take. I cannot vote from the home page.

I don't have any problems with firefox, but for some reason poll results do not return after I vote.

Oh, the featured content has this white text on black background text box that covers the images in most of the rolling images in that box. I am not sure if that is as designed or a Safari thing. (Though it looks the same in Camino, which is a Gecko engine browser.)

I noticed that there was no listing of recent comments on the front page the last two days, but they seem back today.

I've been switching back and forth between Firefox & Opera lately and things look and work fine in both browsers.
