pc_capture56 I’m on the road traveling this week and one of my favorite programs to use is Microsoft Live Search. I use it for my GPS and more recently to find hotels and restaurants. So when I got done with a meeting early today, I found that I could get a little farther that expected and needed a hotel in Knoxville, TN. So using the Categories function within Live Search I entered Knoxville, TN as my location and searched under the Hotels and Accommodations tab and located my Hotel of choice. After clicking my Hotel of choice it expanded to to display address, phone number, and miles away from the location you entered. Sweet! I can just tab down to the phone number and tap it to make my phone call. The phone just rang and rang. Nothing. Huh, what the heck is going on. A tried another Hotel and the same thing happened. I knew then that it wasn’t that every Hotel in Knoxville was closed, but something on my Tilt was not set up correctly. Dialing Rules. Crap. I forgot to setup my dialing rules for long distance and local calls. This is a pretty simple task to complete, and I know the vast majority of you already know this and have probably done so already. But if you are new to Windows Mobile, and more specifically the AT&T Tilt or HTC TyTN II, just click after the break and I will walk you through how to setup your Dialing Rules so you can make one tap phone calls from Live Search or phone numbers that don’t have a “1″ in the linked phone number.

NOTE: This may or may not be necessary for anyone using the AT&T ROM. Test it out first and see if it is a problem on your device. This has occurred to me and solved the problem on several NON AT&T ROM’s I have used.

Read more on how to set up your Dialing Rules after the break.

I thought I would run through the whole Live search process to show exactly what I am talking about and why it didn’t work.

pc_capture57 The picture to the right is exactly what you see in Live Search under Hotels and Accommodations. As you can see, the phone number is linked so you can tap it to directly dial the phone number. Very nice feature. But what is missing is the long distance country code in front. That’s why the phone call cannot be completed unless the dialing rules are setup properly.

pc_capture58 So here is how you setup your Dialing Rules. First navigate through the following screens: Device/Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced (tab at the bottom)

pc_capture59 Tap the Dialing Rules on the left. At this point you will need to check the box next to “Use Dialing Rules”. Mobile is/was automatically checked and then hit Edit at the bottom.

pc_capture60 You can change the Name if you wish or leave it as it is. Make sure that your Country Code and Area Code are filled out properly and then hit Dialing Patterns. If you wish you can disable call waiting or change to Pulse dialing but I never have.

pc_capture61 Once you enter into the Dialing Patterns setup screen, you will have to know your local requirements for phone calls. Where I live, I have to dial the area code first (without the country code of “1″) prior to dialing the number for locals calls. I think this is stupid as there is only two area codes in the whole State, but they obviously didn’t consult me before doing something stupid like this. So in my case, I have to edit the local calls to +FG. all else stays the same as the default.

Tap “OK” 4 times and you will have completed the Dialing Rules Setup and taken yourself back out to the today screen. I hope this helped some of you. Take care and thanks for visiting TiltSite.com!

I have a Samsung Omnia and I set up dialing rules as you described here but they are not applied. My contacts have phone numbers in canonical format and my mobile runs WM 6.1. Do you have an idea of how can I fix this problem?

    Thanks!

Thanks. I got the Tilt from eBay and live in Denmark - had to use the country code every time i made a call. And use it with contacts. I must have been too lazy to figure this out myself so thanks a lot. Much easier to make calls now, heh :-)

I'm a pilot. I'm always traveling and I've never had to touch dialing rules with any at&t phone inside the US. I had the original ROM and now the new HTC ROM for tilt.
I wish the tilt had a simple "edit before call" feature when calling from outside the country, like my old sony ericsson.
  • I wasn't exactly sure with the AT&T; ROM. I am using a "NON" AT&T; ROM and this solved my problem. I added a note to make sure people test it first to see if they are having a problem.

I concur. Dialing anywhere in the US while in the US should not require the use of country codes. Simply the 10-digit number should suffice...

I have a Tilt, and I've used AT&T/Cingular for years and I've never had to change dialing rules while traveling, not once. And I've used Live Search in Nashville, TN. AT&T has never required the 1 or +1 (obviously it's different when outside the U.S.).
