sshot002Probably I’m not supposed to talk about it here but what the heck, Dell abandoned me on this matter so… I installed WM6.1 in my Axim X51v and I’m glad that I did it. It’s like I bought a new Pocket PC. My Axim works faster than when it was using the so called "legal" WM5 ROM from Dell.

One of the reason why I have not done it before was because many of these 3rd parties ROM do not work well with .Net applications and in my work with Tweaks2K2 that’s really important. But these ROM have gone a very long way from the point of view of quality. The one I’m using does not have to envy anything to any of the ROM released by Dell in the past.

  • Date back to 2007, due to an open(maybe leak?) source of MTK platfrom (a wireless communication development platform), there are millions of cell phone factories burst out in south China.

These factories made lots of famous-brand cell-phone-copies in a short period of time. They just copied the outline and software design from Nokia, Apple iPhone etc.

The manufacturing cost is very low so many people are involved. However, these cell phones are not all completely copied. They are even totally redesigned and added a lot of features. A brand called "NCIKA" even went very popular in China.

People're even joking that the farmers in big mountains can develop and design a cell phone and these phones was called "Shanzhai Ji" (In Chinese , "Shanzhai" means "little mountain village"; "Ji" means machine, here means cell phone;) and then the name is widespread in China.

Since then, many funny/weird stuff from ordinary people are called "shanzhai" something.
  • Don't Panic!
I've only connected to my secure home network so far and I just used the Dell WLAN Utility to do it like I always have, it connected fine. My gwes.exe problem has disappeared :). I've still got a lot of installing and tweaking to do yet but I'm very happy with LennySh's efforts.

I've tried 2 different 6.1 ROMS on my x51v. The biggest hurdle I have is that I must use Odyssey client to connect successfully to WIFI signals most of the time. Very annoying. Anyone else notice this issue?
  • Don't Panic!
I'll be joining you tonight ctitanic. I can't imagine using my Ax without Tweaks2k2. Plus if my other WM6 devices are any indicators this ROM update shoud fix my gwes.exe issue and allow me to read online again at baen.com.

I've been sporting this version for a while, it's faster better, and I haven't found any software that doesn't work with it yet!
