In today’s age, most people have at least some level of reliance on electronics and computers. Maybe it’s just a minor convenience, maybe it’s keeping us going. Either way, like all machines, computers and electronics tend to go out after a while, but what happens to the data on these devices? Normally it would be lost, until now.

sshot001 Spb has us covered in this digital age where loosing data, even on a handheld pocket PC (contacts, pictures, etc), would be at the very least, inconvenient. Best yet, not only does it back up your personal data, it can also back up your programs too.

Spb really went all out on this backup program (I’m using version 2.0), throwing in the ability to run full backups, backing up your data, programs, and the like; running a custom backup that allows you to choose exactly what you want to backup (don’t want to go through the whole big thing); scheduling backups (including the ability to only run scheduled backups when on AC power); and finally restoring backups from your previous backup files…although, Spb Backup does come with the ability to create self-inclusive EXEs that contain your backup, and the restore software, all in one convenient executable.

More after the break

Spb Backup packs a whole bunch of features into a rather small package. With the listed features above, they also include compression and encryption for the backup file, as well as a unpacking tool for your desktop/laptop PC, and so much more.

It’s not without some drawbacks however. The software does require you to exit out of everything and restart at the end of the backup (typical for backup software though, I’m just spoiled by my desktop’s backup software). I also found that I had to do a soft reset (using the button at the bottom of the Tilt) in order for it to boot back up. However this might be because of something other than the backup software itself. The self extracting restore EXEs also take some processor time, so be patient with it.

These minor inconveniences aside (a small price to pay for the safety of one’s data, one might say, and indeed it is a small price), the product really went nicely. The backup was fast, it even compressed data down to a nice small size. Here’s how it stacks up.

Overall the software is fast, intuitive, and powerful. There’s even a plugin for your Today screen that tells you how long it’s been since your last backup. It’s a properly designed mobile app and will be very valuable to your repository of apps on your device. I recommend it to anyone who values their data, which should be everyone. It’ll save you time, money, and a headache. And at just $25($10 if you have the previous version), how can you beat that?

How is the new upgrade feature? I noticed in the press release it said “Device and ROM upgrade modes – NEW!”

Any luck with this feature for restoring your data after you install a new ROM?

A Dutch site described but didn’t test those features. It seems you can transfer your whole setup after a ROM upgrade or to a new device. If it works that’s great, but I wonder… A test would be nice.

Just tested the ROM restore. I started in the official HTC WM6.1 ROM and tested on one of Dutty’s WM6.1 ROMs and the feature works great. There’s an option to overwrite all existing files, it imported both data and programs.

I tried both the ROM upgrade mode and the Device upgrade mode but neither actually flashed the ROM. However, it did revert everything on the new ROM back like it was on the old one.
