Do I need a new Phone?

tilt Of course not, most of us don’t. What makes us have this urge to update every time something new comes out? I haven’t a clue, but I suffer from this as well. The funny thing is that often times I come back to the same devices.

A couple years ago, I used the i-mate Kjam as my primary phone. I’d buy another or test one for a review and 2-3 weeks later, right back to the Kjam. Last year, it was the Palm Treo 750. For the last 6-7 months it’s the Tilt. I’ve been coming right back to the Tilt.  I’ve got the iPhone, the Nokia n95, the HTC Advantage and Touch, the Blackberry Pearl, the Centro, and a couple other phones just laying around unused. Some people prefer some of those phones to the Tilt, but I keep going back to the Tilt. It’s not what you might think either. I don’t keep going back because I own it and the others I don’t, I own most of the others too.

Every time I see a new phone pop up like the HTC Diamond, the Touch Pro, or the Xperia X1, I get really excited for their release, but why? The Tilt is fine. Is it the Geek in me? Sure. I have little interest in owning the Diamond, but the Touch Pro and the Xperia X1 are a couple phones that look like they could upend the Tilt as my daily driver. We’ll see.

Do you find yourself buying new gadgets just because and end up going back what you were using before?

Oh, i am the odd one here. Female with the NEED for the next cool gadget. Got my Tilt monday and will have hours of fun discovering what this baby will do. iPaq to SMT5600 to blackberry 8800 to Tilt. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO happy to be back with Windows Mobile, you have no idea.
  • At least for me, it's the idea that when something new (or better than what I have) comes out, I feel that if I don't sell what I have FAST, it's going to drop in value quickly as more people go for the new, and drop the old.

However, staying with the Tilt vs getting the Diamond, I'd say stick w/the tilt -- it's not worth the price difference to get a diamond, haha

I think it's more of a 'human' thing, more than anything. How can you classify it as a male or female trait? People no matter male or female always want to have the latest and nicest things :). I still love my tilt. I'd take it any day over an iPhone

HTC Pro is sexy as hell though. I'd love to get one of those in my hands... for free.

I have to agress with all these comments, the Tilt has been the keeper for me. I started with a Treo 680 (R.I.P. left on top of car and drove off without thinking) and was saving my pennies to get the Treo 750....when the Tilt caught my eye. Not only did the GPS and internet worked for me when i needed it (to find a junk yard after losing my car keys in mall), but it was a life saver.....true story. I love the new toys but there is nothing better that I can think of then the Tilt, how many other phones can you constantly change the rom and settings and be pleased to your hearts contempt. Happy Tilting....

go with the refurb and save some bucks. that's what I did... it came in looking like new, and functions just fine. Cost me only $150 instead of full price...

Guys can't resist.... Must have new gadget .... I have decided to upgrade to a Tilt. Where I hope to stay. But, I have a question. I have the Treo and I'm somewhat satisfied. I have been weighing the option of a NEW Tilt or a refurbished one from AT&T. Does anyone have thought as to the pros and cons? Because I too must upgrade. Thanks .... By the way great site.

Ive been away from the site for a while, came back in time for the hardspl update, good stuff. I love the tilt. i think, believe it or not, the thicker design may be a pro, it just holds better in my hand when surfing the web. and the slide out keyboard is sweet. i like feeling the keys, i can type without checking i pressed them. wish screen was bigger tho.

I really agree with this and some of the comments. I think it is a total "guy thing" (although I'm sure some women out there have it too) to WANT the next new toy.

I love the Tilt. I used to have the 8525, and got the Tilt shortly after it came out because I was eligible with ATT for an upgrade. I enjoy everything about it, except the internet browsing experience. I am probably going to be tempted by the 3G Iphone -- but I have a Ipod Touch 32gb and that to me was my "pacifier" for an Iphone. I think I am still married to Windows Mobile for a while although Apple is giving it a good challenge -- which is a good thing.

Like Chris, I have a daily driver, and right now, its the Tilt. It was the BlackJack 1 and before that the Treo 750. I used both of those for about 6-8 months each. I'm going to get an iPhone 3G; and we'll see how that goes, but I may come back to the Tilt if things go south on me... we'll have to wait and see.

I believe its a guy thing. We always want the newest coolest toys. Do we need them no but do we want them heck yes. You always want what you dont have. That goes with all things. If you have a mercedes you want a ferrari, if you have a big home you want a mansion and so on and so on.
  • Touch Pro makes me feel warm inside, but it will be a while before I but a new fone, this was an upgrade from my SMT5600... Can I go back from a PDA to a Smartphone? prob, but that would make life more simpler, who needs that!
  • If I had the money I'd have every new phone and cool little gadget out there today... but y'know being a reviewer I do get a lot of cool things, or things that I think are cool, I get them and well, it normally turns out that the hype is just that, hype, that cool new product really isn't that cool, and well, I really didn't NEED it....
  • For me, I HAVE to have the latest device. I am totally addicted. I have owned the 8125, 8525, and now the 8925, also known as the Tilt. At the end of the day, the Tilt has easily been the most robust device I have ever owned. I guess that goes without saying as device always continue to improve. But the Tilt has been the most advanced device over its predecessor than any other device in history. (In my opinion). It does it all, Camera, Video, GPS, Internet, 3G, Keyboard, Tilt Screen, and memory. But what is next? The only advancment that I really see in the Xperia is VGA screen with video out, and hopefully improved drivers. Otherwise, the advancement is not that much improved from the Tilt. I also find that it is interesting that the Tilt is nearing it's first birthday, and it is still the Big Dog on the block.
