Celio RedFly in Action
November 7, 2009 – 9:36 pm | Comments

A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Do you watch videos on your Tilt?

So, I’m curious as to how many people out there watch videos on their Tilt or TyTn II? Before you even say it, I don’t want to discuss the whole ‘video driver situation’, personally I’m happy with the video on my Tilt, it works fine for what I want it to do.

The Tilt is a great phone overall in my opinion, and can be a great all in one video and audio player, I personally have retired my MP3 players in favor of just using the Tilt for taking my music with me.

I have children, and we have lots of kids movies, and sometimes we’re in the car for long periods of time, it’s hard to keep your kids happy while sitting in a car not able to do anything, so what I did was transfer a few of their favorite movies over to my Tilt so they can have something to do other than stare out the window or fight with each other; You know what it works, they think it’s the coolest thing watching movies on ‘Dad’s phone’ and it keeps them quiet as well.

What I want to know is what you use to encode or recode your videos, what software do you use, be it free or pay type software. In the following weeks I’m going to be taking a look at and reviewing several free and pay software options that allow you to easily recode DVDs and regular video files like Divx, to the size to be able to be viewed on your phone.

I have quite a few different programs installed, but of course I can’t know every choice and I’d like to know what others use and can recommend or not for creating videos for the Tilt. I’m also curious as to how many people out there use the Tilt as their full time music and video player.

  • i wanna watch movies on my at&t tilt but there's no sound how do i fix it any suggestions

MediaCoder is the best I've used by far. It's open-source (free) but performs better than any pay software I've used. It even has built in settings for mobile devices. I use the included "MP3/MP4 Players" digital media players extension. Very fast encoding and excellent quality. I can get a 700MB DivX down to 176MB mp4.

I use TCPMP to watch most of my video.

I use Windows DVD Maker and Import the .avi files and make them into .wmv (assuming that the dvd is not protected) once converted i just use media player to syn them into my tilt. when syncing it automatically compresses the files so they end up being smaller than the pc versions i can fit two movies comfortably on my small 2 gig and still have room for some pics and other small files. btw - my kids like happy feet and spiderman.

    @ Vikas

I do agree that video seems a little washed out using the SKYFire browser but it handles most if not all websites that stream video. I'm in a 3G area so I get the most out of my unlimited data plan and SKYFIRE. Finally. lol
  • Vikas
I use TCPMP for Youtube/DivX videos, with a Kyocera Stereo bluetooth headset that I got for $30.
During the day, I sometimes listen to Bloomberg TV online using windows media player.

I am pretty satisfies on how TCPMP handles the divx/flv videos.. I have a few 100 MB+ video from the days of stage6 and they do fine.

Video through skyfire is choppy and washed out.. and you can't do fullscreen properly.. So I prefer TCPMP for youtube..

The issue for me is that the Tilt has a noticeably worse DSP than any MP3 player I've ever owned. If you're satisfied with the sound quality, more power to you, but my only complaint about the Tilt is it cannot replace my personal media player without having a far better DSP.

    Check out orb.com.

You install a small comonent on your PC and you can access to your entire media collection from you phone, laptop, work/school PC, Wii, whatever.

All you need is a decent (200Kbps+) data conention.

If I'm gonna be on a plane, I use Pocket DVD studio to conver DVD and video files. It will output DIVX or WMV. However, I've had a lot of stability issues with the encoder.
  • I haven't tried any streaming yet with my Tilt, I do have the HTC Streaming program in my phone but just never had time to play around with it... as for headphones I like to use the Logitech Freepulse Bluetooth most of the time when I want just wireless headphones, I also have a set of Bluetake BT that has a microphone as well, but really I prefer my SteelSeries Siberia Earbuds over all I have, they're corded but the sound is excellent.. for programs, at the moment installed for testing I've got: A-One Video Converter, Aplus DVD Ripper, Daniusoft Media Converter, Extra DVD Ripper Express, Plato DVD to 3Gp, Plato Video to 3gp, Pocket Divx Encoder, Xilisoft Video Conveter, Quick Media Converter, Xilisoft Dvd Ripper, and ZC Video to Cell Phone Converter.. So I'll be taking a look at all of those, and once done I'll do a summary type article where I'll compare everything including times to rip/convert.. Then after those I'll try and get my hands on some of the ones you guys mentioned for testing as well
  • bartveld
I use SPB Mobile for ripping. Works great and is very easy to use. TCPMP for watching.
  • jericho
recommend handbrake for ripping as well. i use coreplayer for video and pocketplayer for audio. pocketplayer is awesome for streaming internet radio and podcasts. listening to twit.tv podcasts makes long commutes bearable. slingbox mobile player works great as well.
  • J Bone
Hmmm.. Nice article. I like it when I have to think. LOL

I honestly haven't watched any movies on my tilt. I use my SKYFIRE browser to watch CNN or any other "video clips" that may seem interesting.

As for music I only have a 4gb memory card so I carry the bare essentials with me. Simply because I have filed up my 750gb hard drive with music over the years and I use ORB (wonderful program) to stream my entire music libraty to my Tilt. I officially have no need for an MP3 player now.
  • Mark
DVDFab Platinum for ripping/converting; has custom sizes (removing bars); handles Divx/MP4

CorePlayer for playback; works great and can boost audio. Goes a little wonky when a call comes it, but still works.

    PocketPlayer for MP3 music.

I work out listening to music on Bluetooth stereo headsets and my kids love watching movies (heck so do I to pass the time) on the tilt. We have about 10 movies loaded up. The only real complaint is that it takes a long time to transfer a movie via USB, removing the 8Gb card and putting it in a reader is manageble.
  • Jimmy
I love my Tilt, I have spent more time messing with settings and installing applications then actually using it as a phone. I watch my favorite music videos and listen to my music via my Motorola BT HT820 stereo headphones and it is great, it's also cool to check out youtube once in a while to see whats new.

I have an 8GB card. I have 460 songs and at 3 movies plus numerous TV show Eps and have almost 4GBs free. I use Sompy Encoder. The quality is ok but it's FAST!!!! I can convert a 700+mb Divx movie in about 5 minutes. The file comes out at 130mb. I just got Coreplayer(I had TCPMP for 4 months). Coreplayer is the ***T!!!! For DVD Ripping I have started using Handbrake. It's Slow but I can rip in H264 with Ac3 sound. Coreplayer supports these codecs. I noticed the difference in quality.
  • JJ
As player I use CorePlayer with the QTV setting for video, though I've found that doesn't work with all custom ROMs (note I'm using an original HTC TyTN II, unbranded), and playback speeds differ wildly between those ROMs.

Either way, the TyTN II + CorePlayer + converter cable + Sennheiser PMX-100 has replaced my MP3 player as the audio player of choice.

When I travel by train (my girl lives an hour by train away from me) I usually watch some TV show I didn't watch the night before, the 350mb usenet/torrent download version. I find that's about the max the Kaiser can decently play - but again this depends on various factors. It's usually satisfactory in QTV mode (I do not convert/recode these files).
  • HEILI9ER
I stream recorded shows and live TV from Media Center (Vista) to my Tilt using Webguide. Additionally I also use Lifextender to automatically have the commercials cut out of my recorded shows.

    Clone DVD Mobile.
    http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonedvd-mobile.html

This is a great app for ripping to whatever format you want.. if you use AnyDVD with it you can do home movies as well w/o any hastle.. well worth the money (or it was before it changed to euro.. but still likely worth it)
  • hmm.. well learn something new everyday.. I only ever encode to divx and mpg1/2 so I don't really pay attention to what's going on with WMV format, from my experience though WMV format was always larger than divx/mpg2 so I never used it
  • Unless the application developer creates their own WMV encoder (not sure this is even possible), they use WMF (either directly or via the WM/ASF Writer DirectShow filter) which is multi-threaded. So multi-thread support is "free".
  • I use Quad Core as well, my main rig is Q6600 based and it all really depends on the program you use and if it supports multi-threading, some do and some don't...
  • The size of a WMV is highly dependent on the profile that's used (frame size & bit rate). My understanding is that WMV and DIVX produce very similar results both in size and quality.

I use WMV mostly because it's part of the supported OOTB ecosystem on both systems. Also conversion is multi-threaded so it scales well with additional cores (moving from 2 to 4 cores reduced encode times almost by half).
  • you transfer to WMV format? I always use Divx it seems much smaller.. a whole movie is about 150mb or less, I never put them in WMV format either, so I can't give you an exact comparison
  • I use DVRMSToolbox and DVRMStoWMVHD to automatically remove commercials then convert the files to WMV. And CopyToPPC to copy them over when I connect the phone to my PC.

I aslo use DVRMStoWMVHD to convert VIDEO_TS (ripped DVDs) to wmv for the phone.

    All three applications are free.

Hi everyone and i must agree with the author that this phone does entertain my little ones as well. It comes in very handy when you need those extra minutes of silence to speak to another adult or waiting for your wife to get out of fitting room or doctors visit. I used DvdFab Platnium (trial version) and it worked great. So good that it allowed you to amplify the sound level even higher then recorded. version...hence we know how lout our tilts are with the added help. Once i burned the movie i used TCMP to open file since it plays much smoother then windows media player (lips weren't synching with sound). Aside from the cool heads up from Titlsite.....i was able to load movies onto the 8gb micro card for $32 as stated a couple wks. ago. Also it's my full time movie player and audio player...and for the past few months...my full time high speed modem since i'm living in a hotel (HSDPA works awesome by bluetooth or wired) Powers out due to storm as i type this on tilt....once again...great site..happy tilting.
  • I have a Transcend4gig card in my phone, and I haven't even used 1 gig yet. it's got numerous pictures, about 50 songs and three movies on it.. I just don't feel the need to carry hundreds of songs around with me, I don't think there's that many that I actually want to listen to..
as for 16gb microsd cards, I don't know of any out there yet, I just checked NewEgg and the biggest I see is 8gigs
  • Thatplayboy
I do use the Tilt as my audio player but I'm going to need a bigger memory card. I think there is a 16 Gig? Is that true? What do you guys use?
  • Hmm, never heard of that one.. will check it out

and I broke up your HTML link there, if you visit that site turn your volume down, it plays some loud music when you get to the page
  • Scott McB
I use CarryDVD - www .carrydvd .com

Not a bad program, but the UI of it could use some work.

When I travel by plane, I always like to load up a couple movies and watch on my phone. Combine the tilt with noise cancelling headphones, and it is great on a plane.
