Game Review: Bejeweled 2

closeThis post was published 1 year 5 months 15 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

imageBejeweled 2 is the sequel to the popular game Bejeweled. Originally released in 2004, the current version is 1.30 for the Pocket PC.

imageThe sequel to the popular Bejeweled includes multiple game modes: Classic, Endless, Puzzle and Action as well as many new features such as Power Gems, bonus modes and a special soundtrack. It is a substantial upgrade to the original in terms of features and gameplay. (Read the full review after the break.)

Per a special partnership with TiltSite, Astraware is offering a $5.00 discount on this product for TiltSite users at the MobilitySite store. Just enter the Promo code B2TILT during checkout to receive $5.00 off the regular price of $19.95 for the Windows Mobile version. This discount only runs through June 24th, so be sure to act now to receive this special offer. It can be found by clicking here.

imageFor those who have never played Bejeweled before, the object of the game is to match colored jewels in lines of three or more either horizontally or vertically to remove them. Power Gems and Hyper Cubes are new to Bejeweled 2. Lines of four complete jewels form a Power Gem and lines of five form a Hyper Cube. Power Gems create explosions when they are matched with another gem of the same color, and Hyper Cubes remove every gem of that color on the board when switched with it.

TitleScreenThe first Bejeweled only included two game modes: "Easy"  and Timed. With Bejeweled 2, four different game modes are introduced. There’s also five unlockable bonus play modes. The four initial modes are Classic, Action, Puzzle and Endless, all which offer a different style of gameplay and different objectives, providing endless fun for all ages.

Classic Mode

Like the original Easy mode in Bejeweled 1, the objective of classic mode is to complete gem matches of the same type until you run out of moves. Like other game modes, there are seven colors of different gems on an 8×8 board. In ActionModeclassic mode, there are no time limitations. By making matches, you collect points which add up to form your score. Creating combos and special gems score bonus points. Once you run out of moves, the game is over.

Action Mode

Action mode is very similar to Classic mode. The gameplay is the same, the only difference being the fact that you are racing against the clock. If you can’t make moves quick enough or run out of moves, the game is over. Just like Classic mode, every match you make causes the bar on the left side of the screen to rise, and once it reaches the top, the board resets and you move to the next level. The bar sinks if you cannot make a move quick enough.

Puzzle Mode

PuzzleModePuzzle mode is a new type of game to the Bejeweled series. Gems are pre-placed in layouts (see left) and the objective is to remove all of the gems from the level. There are over 75 different levels in the puzzle mode to play. Puzzle mode introduces two new types of objects in play- Rocks and Bombs. Bombs explode after a specific amount of moves, taking the pieces around it as well. Rocks can only be removed by explosions of bombs and power gems and cannot be removed by matching.

Endless Mode

Endless mode is very similar to Classic mode in all ways but one. In Endless mode, you collect a gem each time you advance a level. The goal is to collect as many gems as you can. Levels grow substantially in length every time you advance, which explains why it is called "Endless." Allegedly, there are hundreds of levels, but I never got that far, so I’ll leave it up to you to count.

The graphics and visual effects are very crisp. There’s a soundtrack that accompanies the game in addition to the sound effects for your listening enjoyment. The game neatly keeps track of all your stats and high scores, which can be submitted online to Astraware’s live leaderboards.

This program works well on the Tilt, harmlessly moving between portrait and landscape mode when the keyboard is popped open and closed. Overall, this is a game that will keep you busy for hours with its enticing gameplay and multiple game modes and I recommend purchasing it.

  • Hi everyone! As Im sitting here on the tarmack in Waco Texas waiting to be released to continue to my original destination Dallas, I wanted to thank Patrick for a great review and his hard work securing TiltSite readers a discount of 5 dollars. I can tell you he has put a lot into this. I know from all the emails that we are doing a good job. So lets keep up all the good work! Thanks to all the TiltSite team for their time and effort they put in for free. Oh, and by the way, Parick already owned this game. It wasnt a freebie!
  • Acer, if that is your real handle, I appreciate input on the site. Any input, good or bad, can help us better understand what the readers are interested in.

On the other hand, calling out a site based on one author's review of a game in public is a wee bit rude and quite frankly, unwelcome. If you have a concern about the content that a site offers, you can voice your opinion via email/pm or you can choose not to read that site. There are lots of options online and you are more than welcome to sift through the more general sites and find the nuggets related to your Tilt yourself.

These guys that spend their time bringing together things that are relevent to Tilt owners is their time. They are giving their time to anyone that wants to read. They are not being compensated and they have ZERO reason to be "unbiased" in their opinions. I own the site, i do generate a tad bit of coin from the efforts, but it's not anything to write home about.

I appreciate your concern for the content of the site, but as I have told you before... If you don't like it, don't read it.
  • Sorry about not updating but we do have busy lives, I'm rather new here and I'm trying to get things going with more reviews, I personally have a couple product reviews coming up for Tiltsite that I'm sure you'll appreciate. As for games, yes I personally do play games on my Tilt, albeit not this type of game, but I do have several games on my Tilt. Personally I'm just kind of tied up right now with family things, my 2yr old son was admitted to hospital on Sunday, and I'm busy with that, trying to juggle life, our other kids, while trading places with wife at hospital. I'm not sure why any of the other staff haven't updated the site so i can't comment on them.. I do know that Doug is traveling for work at the moment though and that he's personally and professionally very busy at the moment...

You know, you're more than welcome to jump on-board and start writing yourself. If you're unwilling to do so, sorry we aren't entertaining enough.

Many people use their Tilt to play games. This review addresses their interest.

Just a question to you guys/folks at TiltSite.com, are you people using the Tilt for GAMES? I mean is/are there no other programs/utilities/issues that you can write about except to pick up some game and review it just so you can fill it with content and keep this site updated? I would rather you not review these silly games than update your site.
I was a fan before, and I realise that more and more this site is not updated and days go by without any new content.. and I guess this is another way for you to update the site with reviews that I feel are for the sake of keeping the site updated. Guess the pretense of being a Tilt focused and unbiased reviews of products and their useability is just that a pretense.
