Well this is certainly a bummer for those that were expecting to take advantage of their new iPhone’s capabilities.

With the iPhone 3G’s significantly faster data transfer rates and ability to perform voice and data functions simultaneously, potential buyers have become intoxicated with the idea of tethering the device: using it as a cellular modem for laptops — a service AT&T and other carriers offer for many other portable phones. iPhone Atlas has learned, however, that AT&T will not be offering tethering capabilities for the iPhone 3G.

..and the Apple apologists are already all over this, explaining why:

    1) 3rd party apps will handle tethering (which is how pretty much every deficiency in the iPhone is now being handled by the Apple fanboys. That or just chanting “3G! 3G!” until critics get bored and go away)
    2) You can use WiFi to make your phone a hotspot, then just create new WAP/WPA accounts (wha?)
    3) Tethering is uncool and last year anyway (like…wow)

Well, this is not surprising, but still disappointing. I wonder if AT&T listens to customer requests, and if enough people request it, would entertain offering tethering with the iPhone. I’ve been able to do it easily with past phones on AT&T (Treo 680 and a Nokia 6620) and wish I could do it with one of the best phones, IMHO, they offer…

http://MMS.ifind2.com iPhone TETHERING only works from the ifind2.com site as of 2010. You'll have to follow all of the steps, since there are many different iPhones out there with many different firmwares. This work 100% though all of my friends including me have used it.

As of 2010 the only site that still gives you iPhone Tethering is the http://MMS.ifind2.com site. Just follow the steps and it will work. Try not to update to 3.1.3 if it's all possible. You will still be able to enable tethering with that miserable update of 3.1.3 but note, not even Steve Jobs from apple updated his phone with that update. Basically that update only helps AT&T and not you.
