Well, this is not surprising, but still disappointing. I wonder if AT&T listens to customer requests, and if enough people request it, would entertain offering tethering with the iPhone. I've been able to do it easily with past phones on AT&T (Treo 680 and a Nokia 6620) and wish I could do it with one of the best phones, IMHO, they offer...

..and the Apple apologists are already all over this, explaining why:

1) 3rd party apps will handle tethering (which is how pretty much every deficiency in the iPhone is now being handled by the Apple fanboys. That or just chanting "3G! 3G!" until critics get bored and go away)
2) You can use WiFi to make your phone a hotspot, then just create new WAP/WPA accounts (wha?)
3) Tethering is uncool and last year anyway (like...wow)

Read the Spirit of Mossberg inhabit Zach Epstein at Boy Genius (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/06/14/att-says-no-tethering-for-iphone-3g/). He is currently being deservedly slapped around in the comments.
