The wait is almost over my friends. Yes, as HTC Diamond owners gloat in browser superiority, the rest of us will soon drink (eth) from the same Opera Mobile 9.5 cup.

We have some exciting news to share today. It’s almost time to release Opera Mobile 9.5 for Windows Mobile to the world. We thank you for your patience and support as we make what we (and many others) believe is the best browser for mobile phones. A release testing phase is underway now and the target date for the first beta is July 15th. You will be able to download it from opera.com just like you would any other versions of Opera.
Opera Mobile 9.5 will be based on the same browser engine as Opera 9.5 for desktop, and this is the reason why it has taken some time to get it ready. A new version of the browser engine will ensure that you can surf the Web with a browser supporting the latest and greatest in Web standards.
Some versions of Opera Mobile 9.5 are already shipping on great phones like the HTC Touch Diamond, and some of you have asked why we wouldn’t be able to release it publically yet. As you probably know, releasing a version that works on a large variety of phones is more complex than making it work on one specific phone. You should also expect a few differences between the versions that are pre-installed on phones and the public version of Opera Mobile 9.5.
We’ll have more details about the product in the near future. Thanks again, and we hope you’re ready for some beta testing with us.

Now we all know that you can still get your Opera on by heading over to XDA. There are a few work around’s to get the Hacked Version running if that is what you want to do. The problem is that the Diamond (Drool) is running a VGA screen so there has been some cases of Opera not rendering on the QVGA screen so swell.  I am holding off and will jump into the Public Beta when it is released in a couple of weeks. So get ready, Opera will at the very least hold us over until FireFox or Skyfire is released!

The Wait is almost over!

  • KCMatt, definetly sign up for the Skyfire Beta! I really like it. It doesn't zoom in and out as nice as Opera, but it works very well. Flash works on it, but for youtube it is not so great. But it does work. The thing I like about Skyfire is how much better it performs in my Edge Network than Opera.

Thanks! I'm using Opera Mobile 8.65, so have been anxously waiting for the better UI of 9.5. I hoped it would have Flash support, but I guess not.

Maybe I should sign up for the Skyfire beta...

The difference is Skyfire can render any flash site on the web that you can access with the desktop FIrefox browser. So all the streaming video sites are accessible. I'm on the Skyfire beta and it works really well for accessing those sites. The only gotcha is the video performance suffers, gets choppy when not in good 3G coverage areas. I have Opera 9.5 build 1184 (from xda-devs) and it's really nice, but no flash video support. The interface works well (very similar to Safari on the iPhone) and is finger-friendly. It's slightly slower than Opera Mini to render pages, but can load pages that Mini cannot.

What makes Firefox and Skyfire better?

Or is it just because their releases will mean two more browsers to try?
  • strikeone
cool - yeah it will definitely keep us busy until Firefox and skyfire come around.
