According to Digitimes, HTC will be making the successor to the T-Mobile Shadow…

High Tech Computer (HTC) will be the contractor for T-Mobile USA’s forthcoming UMA (unlicensed mobile access)-enabled smartphone, the Shadow II, making the Taiwan-based handset maker a new supplier of UMA handsets for the US wireless service provider in addition to Nokia, Samsung Electronics and RIM (Research in Motion), according to market sources.

1st off, it’s great to see that T-Mobile is going to furthur the life of the Shadow with a 2nd go around. The Shadow is a nice phone.

Now you are probably wondering what the hell UMA is huh? Sure you are…

Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology provides access to GSM and GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, including Bluetooth and 802.11. By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA, subscribers receive a consistent user experience for their mobile voice and data services as they transition between networks.

In a nutshell, it’s a technology that allows for your call to be handed off from network to network using whatever it can find, including WiFi.  Thanks to UMATechnology.org for the description, head over to their site for more info.
