AMD bows out of the handheld graphics arena

In a market that’s attracting more and more competitors, one is finally bowing out, AMD.  Why?  Well a $1.2 billion Q2 loss will do that to you.

From Engadget:

In addition to an overall $269M operating loss, the company is taking an $876M charge against the purchase of ATI so it can abandon the handheld graphics and digital TV markets. To be honest, we hadn’t been hearing much about ATI’s plans in those areas…

Why is this important to us?  Well our wonderful Tilts contain the Qualcomm MSM7200 which uses the ATI Imageon video accelerator.

Now whether this is a good or a bad thing (or either of those for that matter) is still unclear.  You may remember from our earlier updates that the drivers are getting along quite nicely so AMD leaving the market may be a rather moot point.

Either way though, this will probably less affect our current devices and have more of an impact on future devices which may opt for an nVidia (or otherwise) graphics solution.

EDIT: Via Engadget:

…AMD has been hinting at its plans to take on Intel’s processor du jour, the Atom, for some time now, but brand new CEO Dirk Meyer is now getting slightly more official about it than the company has been previously, and he’s promising that AMD will reveal all come November…

Seems like AMD may actually come back but maybe not in mobile graphics

  • It's a shame really, competition is always a good thing..

but AMD started loosing the battle when the Intel C2D came out.. even me who was strictly AMD for years now has Intel CPUs for my main computers...

they just can't keep up anymore
