CDMA HTC Touch Pro/Raphael Drops on FCC For Sprint? Where Does That Leave AT&T?

htctouchpro Sorry for the long title, but I found this a little disheartening this morning. It appears that the next contender to de-throne the iPhone and the Tilt will not come from AT&T. This is not a rant about the Tilt and any shortcomings. I believe the Tilt to be the most complete device I have ever owned and I could not imagine my daily life without it. But I have grown accustomed to AT&T (Formerly Cingular) having the most cutting edge Windows Mobile Devices available from a US Carrier. (Which means discounted device prices!) Since the 8125 (HTC Wizard), to the 8525 (HTC HERMES), and now with the 8925 Tilt (HTC Kaiser), we have been spoiled with awesome HTC/WinMo Devices from AT&T.

So now on with the news. According to Cellfanatic, The HTC Touch Pro/Raphael “has just passed through the FCC filings today, labeled “RAPH800″. They have also confirmed that Sprint will be releasing the Touch Pro Q4 2008.

So where does that leave AT&T? Of course we all know that they are getting tons of press over the upcoming iPhone 3G release. (yawn) I will be the first to admit that the iPhone has been a home run for AT&T. But it isn’t a WinMo phone that we crave. It has its advantages and shortcomings. All well documented of course. But as the Tilt nears it’s first birthday, it is still a very impressive device. And not obsolete by any means. But what’s next I wonder?

Is AT&T too caught up in iPhone Fever (plague) and has taken their eye off of the Windows Mobile Device Market? I hope not. AT&T also needs to incorporate the HTC TouchFlo 3D in their next device and forget about all the Bloat that they are famous for. I can live without the front facing camera, but I really would like a ROM loaded with all the HTC goodness!

So what’s your thoughts on the Touch Pro/Raphael? Chime in and let us know. Personally, I am in LOVE with the keyboard. The 5 row QWERTY keyboard is sure to be hit if it large enough. Superior to the Sony XPERIA X1 which has gotten a lot of bad press. VGA Screen with video out. And lets be honest, the Touch Pro looks AWESOME!

So what’s next for AT&T? We will have to wait and see!

Read more about the Touch Pro/Raphael after the break.

The HTC Touch Pro™ brings together elegant touch screen response with the direct precision of keyboard entry… leaving out nothing to deliver a powerhouse   communication tool in a beautiful, compact design.

The 2.8-inch VGA touch screen provides four times the resolution of most smart devices, making email, documents and web pages sharper and easier to work with than ever before.

HTC’s rich, touch-responsive interface, TouchFLO™ 3D, provides a stunningly intuitive way to zip through common tasks like messaging, calendar checks or making calls. Delve a little deeper to find that playing media files, searching for contacts and surfing the web are also responsive to your touch.

to harry: The GSM ones now available are from Europe for T-Mobile there and do not have all of the necessary quad bands for the US. You would get very poor coverage. Their data bands are also somewhat incompatible depending on your carrier or the speed you expect.

We have done our research, maybe you need to dig a little deeper or spend $1k on a phone that would not work very well in the US . . .

Maybe you should buy one and tell us how good it works here in the US.

Havnt you guys seen ebay or XDA dev's? the touch pro has been released for GSM unlocked but has a 1000$ price tag. Come on people, research your stuff better lol.

I'm glad that the touch pro will be CDMA. I just hope that Verizon will release it. Verizon seems to be behind all the time. I wanted the Tytn 2 very badly but it was never released with CDMA. So hopefully this won't be an only Sprint phone.

It appears that the only version to go through the FCC is the CDMA version. The FCC process is not that easy but for a seasoned company like HTC is is easier. The need to add a band or two to the existing European version of the T-Mobile phone. Radios are not easy inbthe same case . . . especially if GPS is involves. different chip sets and all that . . . It is not the same phone . . .

There are GSM and CDMA versions of the HTC Touch Pro, AT&T is GSM... The CDMA version coming for Sprint doesn't mean anything, AT&T could pick up the Touch Pro GSM just as easily.

I am also a somewhat satisfied Sprint user because of data speed and my Mogul. I need more memory and the Touch Pro seems to be just the phone, plus there is the styling and 6.1 and TouchFlo. Sooner the better.

I love my Tilt (still want those drivers though) and was hoping the Touch Pro would be the replacement for my much loved device. There is a blurb on Boy Genius Reports that has some insight to AT&T's upcoming road map that does hint to both WinMo 6.1 for the Tilt and also a Tilt II in the works. Do you think the Touch Pro could be mad with the tilt screen to become (TADA!!) the Tilt 2?

  • Even if you buy the Touch Pro you will still be required to visit TiltSite at least twice a week! There is no leaving!!!! LOL

Also, you can gloat about that fabulous keyboard and what will hopefully be an awesome screen! Let's hope HTC is working hard on the Driver side of the equation too. The Diamond has already had several ROM updates.
  • I'm right there with ya in the "bummed out" section. I was REALLY anticipating the release of the diamond pro. I loved the idea of the diamond, but had already made up my mind that I would pass because of a lack of a physical keyboard... when all of a sudden i heard about the diamond PRO. I won't even PRETEND here... i just knew that both devices belonged in the fold at AT&T and knew I'd be getting one soon after they released it. After I read this morning about the CDMA version... i bummed out. Verzion or Sprint don't DESERVE this phone! The service STINKS on sprint (i have a nextel/sprint hybrid phone for work.. uuuuuugh. and a friend who has sprint... we just talk when he's home where the service is the most reliable....). Verizon locks up the features into an almost unusable state.... i was sorely disappointed with that announcement. I sincerely hope that AT&T is still able to secure this phone.. on one hand.. YAAAAAY FOR HTC!!! and on the other BOOOOO FOR SPRINT!!!

    *sigh*

I'm a rare breed - a mostly satisfied Sprint user. (Their fast EVDO network really makes all the difference)

As such, I'm eagerly awaiting the touch pro and am quite pleased it's coming to Sprint first. It's nice not to have to wait around for a year for a cutting edge device. I haven't used TouchFLO 3D yet, but it looks quite nice and will make all my iPhone toting friends, if not reconsider their iPhone, at least look twice and not patronize me with sympathy over using a WinMo device.
