A few weeks ago, VIA announced it’s 3G enabled UMPC reference design called OpenBook and made it freely available to vendors. Announcements by Everex today sound like the first fruit of that design will come from the company in November in the form of a 10.2 inch mini-notebook.
According to FIC, a turnkey manufacturer for Everex, the new mini notebook will boast a 3G option – HSDPA, HSUPA or WiMax and is designed to be bundled with a 3G contract from a service provider, much like a mobile phone. The device will also come with 802.11b/g wifi connectivity built in.
The new mini-notebook will come with Windows XP or an unspecified Linux distro and use either a 1.6GHz Intel Atom microprocessor or a similar processor from Via Technologies. It wasn’t clear if buyers will have their choice of processors or if the processor will depend on which OS is preinstalled. Other hardware specs include up to 2GB of DRAM, a 1.3-megapixel Web cam, dual USB ports, express card slot, a built in 4-in-1 card reader and either a 4-cell or 6-cell battery.
The 10.2-inch WSVGA (wide super video graphics array) LCD screen will use LED (light-emitting diodes) backlights for 1024×600 resolution.
The device will weigh about 1.2-kilograms and is 263-millimeters long by 185mm by 32mm.
No words on pricing or regional availablity from Everex or FIC as of yet.
