Asus to Launch Eee Storage

No, don’t panic, it isn’t an Eee branded SAN network….it’s a website announced by Asustek president Jerry Shen. Eee Storage is a 20GB internet hard drive service for Eee users similar to websites as Microsoft’s Skydrive service. Eee Storage will utilize a drag and drop interface to transfer files between the Eee UMPC and the Eee Storage servers. Users can also set a password to share files with others, similar to popular features on other storage services.
A second site, Eee Download, will have around 3,000 free software titles for Eee users to download. Initially it will be launched in Chinese only but there are plans to expand the available language’s quickly. Down the road, Asus also plans to add an online store to the site, to sell digital music and other content. Asustek is planning to expand the service into an online store enabling users to download music and various other content.
It is good, despite many moves lately which I feel are misteps, that Asus is continuing to try to think of ways to increase the value of Eee products. Sure the idea is not new, but hopefully Asus will add software or hardware enhancements directly to future models to make the best use of it. A dedicated button on the chassis to open a browser connection to your Eee Storage account for example, along with menu options to save a file directly to Eee Storage would be tremendous (get right on that, Mr. Shen). Having secure, branded access to 20G of wireless storage while on the go with a device that by it’s nature has limited onboard storage is a great idea and shows that maybe Asus has not lost it’s way as completely as I have feared.
