A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

AT&T Tilt 6.1 ROM is not Available Officially yet.

closeThis post was published 1 year 2 months 21 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

The other day, Doug posted that it’s coming soon. In addition, dozens of sites posted that the ROM was available. The link to what some thought was the 6.1 ROM takes you to what looks like it is the ROM, but it is not.

The ROM is coming soon though. I spoke with HTC yesterday and all I can say is, standby. On the other hand, I got an email from a reader than shares some nice info…

I am not sure if this reader wants to share his name since this looks like some internal sales stuff, but here it is…

Got an email from the AT&T product people. New TILT software available from HTC on 8/26/08. This ROM update will include the following NEW features:

  • HTC Home: Includes five components: Home, Favorite People, Weather, Launcher and Sound Settings. At the bottom of HTC Home, there is a toolbar that allows you to switch between these components, See CSP for further details on each component.
  • Video Share Calling: allows a user to share one-way video with another wireless subscriber while talking on the phone! With Video Share, users can: Capture live video, streaming that video to another Video Share subscriber in near real time,  Record a live video stream that may be shared at a later time to other Video Share subscribers. Start and stop the video stream during the course of a call.
  • Threaded SMS: Text Messages are organized like IM’s; conversations are sorted by Contact names or numbers (if the sender doesn’t exist in Contacts). Note: The SMS and MMS messages are combined in the same mailbox with this software version.
  • Internet Explorer Mobile: Zoom out to see the entire web page and then zoom in for a close-up on the information that is important to you.
  • Microsoft Voice Command: Dial any number in your phone book without recording a voice tag and open programs with your voice!

Keep your eyes out, it should be here soon!

"did the wm6.1 for the tytn II work? any one try that yet?"

I have tried the update and I'm likin it... however there are a few things about the release that are not so impressive.

    1. they left out the "Internet sharing" app and replaced it with the "WModem" and I was never too fond of that even with my 8525, I have since copied the "Internet Sharing" app from my original and have since still not been able to get my phone to tether...

Proceed with caution as with all things Technical.
  • I tried it and cant find a support selection anywhere... Im skeptical..

did the wm6.1 for the tytn II work? any one try that yet?

O.k. so check this out. If I go to www.htc.com on my tilt using skyfire, then click on support, i can then choose the TyTN II and can download WM 6.1 by entering my serial number. I can then transfer the 88mb file to my desktop to install the rom update. I have downloaded the file to my phone (i have a big storage card), but am leery about uploading it to my device. Any chance it would be any different than the "at&t" wm 6.1 rom? If not, I think we found a work around to get this update now.

    Brian,

Thanks for pointing out the dangers inherrent with flashing non offical ROMS, I realize this and am fully aware of them, however I don't want somebody to accidentally brick their tilt. The one other major danger that you didn't list is that it can void your warrenty.

I was in an AT&T store today and looked at the tilt on display, and it had a little cardboard attachement next to it that said something about "now with WM 6.1" and listed all the new features like video sharing. I waited in line for a minute to ask one of the employees when the update would be coming out for MY tilt, but it was taking too long and I had to make it to a movie. Still, I see this as further confirmation that the update is coming really soon. I wonder if I had bought a device right then and there if it would have WM 6.1 loaded as advertised.

After the debacles I witnessed as a Sprint customer with their Mogul and Touch systems, I'd rather wait an extra week or two for a system that's complete and stable. Don't forget, with HTC you get one shot at an update and, 90% of the time, that's it. If they release a piece of unstable crap, chances are that's what you're stuck with, like it or not. When they released an update to the Touch and the video playback problem was STILL there, know what their official "fix" was? "Buy the next phone, it will work". Seriously. So be patient. You know it's coming soon.
  • thanks for everyones help...
i hope its released on time..
  • the reasons flashing unofficial roms is more dangerous than OFFICIAL roms are many. but the main ones are listed below

    * flashing cooked roms requires you to unlock your phone so that it's able to use roms from other devices... if a file is not written or unlocked correctly. brick

    * once the phone is unlocked you can flash almost any OS you desire onto your phone.. if there are no precautionary measures in place ("are you SURE that your sure?!?" boxes etc) it's possible to flash a rom from another device that is NOT compatible with your device

    * unless you trust the source (the rom cook), you NEVER know if there are any malicious items in the rom package... i've never seen it.. but normally people tend to let the early adopters grab the rom first before deciding to check it out (at least that's what i do) becuase so many times... things STOP WORKING after flashing roms. (remember the radio from hell that no one could figure out how to change for a month?!!?? lol.. good times... good times).

    * unless you know what your doing... it's possible you can screw something up.. it's fairly straightforward.. but i'm sure the cooks like to cover their posteriors in case something goes wrong.. it's nice to have that little disclaimer there.
  • Dave Zaffarano
Att stated that they are working with the new rom to make sure all bugs are worked out so there customers don't have any problems once downloaded. Yes it is annoying and yes everyone is anxious....and yes 8/26 is the word on the release date.
  • Andrew Colacurcio
I bet even HTC is thinking to themselfs "what the f**k is ATT waitin for?
  • KCMatt
I don't have time to play around with custom ROMs, so I'm excited about this official release.
  • Artwoof
I am glad that AT&T & HTC are releasing an (overdue) update, though personally I won't be using it, I have a custom ROM on my tilt.
  • Thanks for the sarcasm..

All I have read about is everyone wanting to flash this and flash that and the warnings that go along with it.

So I thought I would just ask...

I am excited about the new features coming out..
  • EGD
yeah, they officially release software with the hopes that we brick our phone. The trick is that the sales department creates the ROMs. Think of it as a 'conflict of interest' with a good bottom line... Of course they make it simple, simple enough for everyone (including yourself) to flash.
  • I have a question.. SO when this Rom comes out, do we still need to know how to flash it.. and, I assume that we also take the risk at bricking our phone?

Or since its a legit ROM, are they going to make it easy to Flash?
