Blackberry Connect Users Beware of Windows Mobile 6.1

Posted by Chris Leckness on August 29, 2008 – 8:47 am
closeThis post was published 1 year 2 months 11 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

1st off, as a disclaimer, I have not had the opportunity to even charge my Tilt, let alone flash it. I am working on a review of a couple E-Ten phones right now. That said, I don’t have any knowledge on what is broke and what is not.

Next, the warning comes from a reader email. It’s something you should think about. There might be a work around, but I don’t know yet. I am going to check around.

I just upgraded my phone yesterday and after spending 3 hours with AT&T and another hour with RIM and 15 minutes with HTC I found out 2 things First, RIM told me that tey had not come out with a BB connect for 6.1 and that I would have to go back to 6.0. The bad news was that I called HTC and they told me that once I upgrade to 6.1 there is no going back but they are expecting the upgrade from BB shortly. I hope that this shortly is not the same as the shortly we had to wait for 6.1.

Anyone experiencing anything similar?

Do you have a Blackberry capable data plan? A regular data plan does not connect to the Blackberry network.
  • Cedric
    Hi all,

I have a HTC Raphael / touch pro and installed the BB Connect 103. it cannot connect .

    I am on T-Mobile Austria.

I cannot edit the reg-key HKLM\System\Versions - Aku to .0.4.2 ...it seems locked.

    help me please
    thanks
  • felix
hey guys... what about for Samsung Omnia running WM6.1 ??? any advise to get blackberry working on that?
  • Rich
You need to have a Blackberry capable data plan. Blackberry Connect does not use Media Net. It uses data another connection specifically for the Blackberry service.
  • cedar
Do you have to subsribe to AT&T's Blackberry service to use the Blackberry connect? or can you just install and use?
  • Kaydee
For the registry tweak for multiple connnections, all of my contexts are currently set to 1 - do I change them to 3? Do all operators starting with 310 need to change, or only the ones that are 6 digits?

This is a great tip - I would love to get this to work!
  • Rich
    @Dan:

That's actually not a file, but a Registry Key on your mobile device. You'll need a Registry editor, such as the one available via a plugin for Resco File Explorer, in order to edit its value.
  • Dan
Sorry chaps, My IT knowledge is failing me. Im on Orange over in the UK, was told that its impossible to install blackberry connect with WM 6.1 and thanks to this site have fixed that. However. Where is the file HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\RIL\OperatorContex ??

    On my mobile or desktop?

Sorry if this is rather stupid!
  • Rich
htc.com > Select country: US > Support > AT&T Tilt > Software Download > BlackBerry Connect for the AT&T Tilt

    Or just go here :)

    http://www.htc.com/us/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id...

Note: The date on the page still says 8/6 but the file downloaded is the correct one. Version 4.0.0.103. It's the PC Installer, not the CAB file.
  • Guy
I have gone to the site and cant download it, how did you download it?
  • Rich
The new version of BlackBerry Connect (4.0.0.103) has been released and is available on the HTC web site. I've installed it on my Tilt and it is working properly once again.
  • I'm running BBConnect 4.0.0.100 and everything is fine. Another very helpful tweak is to change the operator context from 2 to 3. This is located in the registry at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\RIL\OperatorContex
The operators for AT&T are the six digit numbers beginning with 310. This allows multiple connections to the internet at one time. Your BBConnect will then stay connected when you access something via Medianet. BTW, here is a link to all of the BBConnect cabs.

  • Daniel
Change the reg-key HKLM\System\Versions - Aku to .0.4.2 (yes, with starting dot), before installing BBConnect
  • Chris
Thanks Buck, Hopefully this will help others!
  • Buck
I had this problem also but have fixed it.
First, you need a newer version of the BBconnect cab. The one on the HTC website ends in 97. There is one that ends in 100 at sems.org. This one works.
Next, you need to update the service books. There are instructions on the HTC website.
In order to see the instructions, you have to click on the download link for the BB Connect software and then you can find the instructions.
    Good Luck!
