"Clean ROM" and "Bloat ROM" differences.

closeThis post was published 1 year 3 months 3 days ago.
It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

Hello everyone. Kip Granson here, and this is my first post to TiltSite, so forgive me if this doesn’t come out quite right.

I’d like to first apologize for how vague this article is. I wanted to get this up and out fairly quickly in hopes of catching those of you who haven’t flashed yet. I will likely edit this later and add a lot more detail.

I wanted to get this post up as quickly as possible just so people can get an idea of what the difference is between a “Clean ROM” install and an install that is allowed to complete (installing the ATT Apps and such).

First off, I’d like to explain what I did and what the difference is between the two installs. If you update your Tilt with the official Official ATT Tilt ROM, you will notice, that after it is done installing (approx 10 minutes), you are prompted to align your screen, go through the copy/paste tutorial, asked to set a password, and then you see the desktop, a little dialog pops up saying that it is going to install some applications, it does this for another few minutes, reboots and BAM, your Tilt has been AT&Tafied.

If you don’t want all of the AT&T customizations, you can interrupt this process by doing the following: Once you align the screen, go through the copy/paste tutorial, set (or don’t set) the password, RIGHT as the desktop shows, soft reset the device (insert the stylus into the reset button next to the USB port). It will reboot and start up with the default desktop, no AT&T customizations installed.

You still get the AT&T settings when you do this, it is still on the network, and knows all that stuff.. SMS still works, you can receive calls, etc, you just don’t see the stuff that AT&T wants you to see.

For me, this is a mixed bag of nuts. I don’t have to mess with the clutter and such, but they do add some nice programs to the mix, a fair amt. of games (mostly demos though), and I like the color scheme better than the default. (obviously this can be setup manually).

Does anyone know where these installs are stored, so we can install them piece-meal?

Diving into this post, I don’t know what you’ll find useful or not, but I just wanted to show you the difference. Again, I hope to have more info on differences shortly, hopefully this evening. IF anyone has anything to add, please don’t hesitate to comment.

I took screen shots of the today screens and most of the menu screens so you can visually see the difference, and I’m going to post them here, side by side if I can.

One thing to note, I setup my email/outlook settings initially before I thought to do this, so you will see a little bit of that on the ATT customized ROM.

** The “Web IS, Inc. Basic Screenshot” is the program I used to take the screenshots. This is the only program I added after the ROM install.

Another thing to note, although you notice a number of the icons missing from the non-bloat ROM, they are actually still on the device, they are located under the “windows” directory. A lot of the actual differences isn’t so much in the applications that the ATT ROM installs, but in the customization of the Icons, the addition of the “tools” folder and a number of added ‘web links’ and such. The MobiTV stuff and such are still installed in the “default” ROM, they just aren’t represented with an icon in the start menu.

Kip

How about the "Internet Calling" feature that is normally in WM, is that restored with your tip/trick?
  • Kip Granson
    @Chris

No, that is not the case.

I am thinking I should put a follow up post answering some of these questions. I'll work on that today, look for something by early afternoon.
  • Gomer
I just want to say thanks, this worked like a charm
  • Chris
I'm interested in a few of the new features of 6.1...but am worried that if I remove the bloat...they will go away too.

Does the Voice Command and Threaded SMS go away when bloat is removed?
  • @j Yes there is a check for both. both are on there. on the screen shots above, i actually scrolled them off the screen, i didn't show the whole homepage.
  • j
Thanks Kip. Right now on 6.0 I have the HTCHomeplug checked off because I like the quick access to battery life, the Com Manager, Brightness, etc. On 6.1 is there a checkbox for both HTCHome and HTCHomeplug? I wouldn't want to lose the HTCHomeplug.
  • Kip Granson
@j You can turn that off to get away from the HTC Home, you do this in settings
    Start/Settings
    Click on Today
    Click the "Items" tab
remove the check next to "HTC Home" and whatever else you don't want.

That should get rid of it for you.

Is the only Today screen available after the 6.1 upgrade HTC home? I know I'm an outlier, but I like the WM 6.0 AT&T Today screen (specifically because I don't need an enormous clock and I like how it doesn't aggregate email)
  • Daniel
    Thank you, Kip.

Somehow there's such an app in the Start-Programs direcory, not sure at the moment which. I'll check this out later.
  • Kip Granson
@Johnny B Not a problem. Thanks for reading.
  • Johnny B
    @kip:
thanks that did the trick, reseting before the 3 sec window pops up. thanks again
  • Kip Granson
@Johnny B: You need to actually do the soft reset BEFORE the countdown begins but AFTER you have gone through the tutorials. it's a very short window of opportunity.

Keep in mind, you do not get rid of everything, just the stuff that installs AFTER the ROM is updated, there are still applications and such that ATT puts on their ROMS before the install (config stuff, etc).

@Daniel: That program is a 3rd party utility i installed (Not included on the ROM) so I could take the screen shots. It's not part of the default installs.
  • Johnny B
i also did the soft reset as intructed (and have done in the past) and i am not bloatware free, is there another way to do this. it seems as if its not working for some people. thanks
  • Daniel
What is the file for The "Web IS, Inc. Basic Screenshot"?
I expect it'll be found in the Windows directory?
    Thanks.
  • Daniel
For me the standard bloat removal process worked the 1st time (ie - perform SR while the "customization" message appears on screen.

I wanted to add a tip for non-AT&T customers.
Basically, the AT&T settings come locked with their parameters. These stay effective even if you remove the bloatware.
The result is that you can't browse the Web, etc.
And so you need to find and install the RemoveHiddenProxy.CAB file in the Windows directory, and then you'll be ready to go.

i loaded my att tilt with the new windows mobile 6.1 but the problem is that it seems that now i'm stuck with the att Rom because when it get to the 3 seconds countdown, its doesn't countdown all it does is wait for three secs then start the customization and when i push my stylus in the reset hole, it restarts the phone and takes me back to the countdown thing and re does the customisation. can anybody help me coz i don know if its true but the att rom kills my battery and i don even need it!!
  • Chakri
    hello

    Thanks ThatGuy... Glad it helped.

Thanks Kris. I am going to try to put more up as I have time. I was in somewhat of a hurry and mostly wanted to get the pics up.
