"Clean ROM" and "Bloat ROM" differences.
This post was published 1 year 2 months 14 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.Hello everyone. Kip Granson here, and this is my first post to TiltSite, so forgive me if this doesn’t come out quite right.
I’d like to first apologize for how vague this article is. I wanted to get this up and out fairly quickly in hopes of catching those of you who haven’t flashed yet. I will likely edit this later and add a lot more detail.
I wanted to get this post up as quickly as possible just so people can get an idea of what the difference is between a “Clean ROM” install and an install that is allowed to complete (installing the ATT Apps and such).
First off, I’d like to explain what I did and what the difference is between the two installs. If you update your Tilt with the official Official ATT Tilt ROM, you will notice, that after it is done installing (approx 10 minutes), you are prompted to align your screen, go through the copy/paste tutorial, asked to set a password, and then you see the desktop, a little dialog pops up saying that it is going to install some applications, it does this for another few minutes, reboots and BAM, your Tilt has been AT&Tafied.
If you don’t want all of the AT&T customizations, you can interrupt this process by doing the following: Once you align the screen, go through the copy/paste tutorial, set (or don’t set) the password, RIGHT as the desktop shows, soft reset the device (insert the stylus into the reset button next to the USB port). It will reboot and start up with the default desktop, no AT&T customizations installed.
You still get the AT&T settings when you do this, it is still on the network, and knows all that stuff.. SMS still works, you can receive calls, etc, you just don’t see the stuff that AT&T wants you to see.
For me, this is a mixed bag of nuts. I don’t have to mess with the clutter and such, but they do add some nice programs to the mix, a fair amt. of games (mostly demos though), and I like the color scheme better than the default. (obviously this can be setup manually).
Does anyone know where these installs are stored, so we can install them piece-meal?
Diving into this post, I don’t know what you’ll find useful or not, but I just wanted to show you the difference. Again, I hope to have more info on differences shortly, hopefully this evening. IF anyone has anything to add, please don’t hesitate to comment.
I took screen shots of the today screens and most of the menu screens so you can visually see the difference, and I’m going to post them here, side by side if I can.
One thing to note, I setup my email/outlook settings initially before I thought to do this, so you will see a little bit of that on the ATT customized ROM.
ATT on the Left Non-ATT on the Right
** The “Web IS, Inc. Basic Screenshot” is the program I used to take the screenshots. This is the only program I added after the ROM install.
Another thing to note, although you notice a number of the icons missing from the non-bloat ROM, they are actually still on the device, they are located under the “windows” directory. A lot of the actual differences isn’t so much in the applications that the ATT ROM installs, but in the customization of the Icons, the addition of the “tools” folder and a number of added ‘web links’ and such. The MobiTV stuff and such are still installed in the “default” ROM, they just aren’t represented with an icon in the start menu.
