A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Winterface to win your hearts
New version with numerous improvements

August 13th, 2008 – VITO Technology releases a new version of oneWinterface_news1.1
of its best-sellers – Winterface. Winterface is a Windows Mobile shell that helps you to organize applications and settings at your PocketPC the way you like. The start gesture “rainbow” was replaced in new version by upside down tick ^. Moreover, it has become possible to add to the main screen not only applications, settings and contacts but also any files on your Pocket PC.
Besides, calendar and tasks now can notify you about upcoming events, appointments and tasks. Minor bugs have been also fixed.

The new version 1.1 of Winterface includes numerous improvements. The
major one is that we’ve changed the start gesture, now the application is
started with the help of the upside down tick ^. This gesture is unlikely to
interfere with other applications so that Winterface couldn’t pop out each
time you slide the screen. Drawing the gesture “tick” or letter “v” on your
screen can close any application you are working in.

Other improvements are concerned with tasks and calendar. For most of users
their Pocket PCs are organizers and reminders. Therefore Winterface now have red
indicators with numbers above Calendar and Tasks icons to show active tasks and
upcoming events. When tapping Calender you can see a semi-transparent window
with all events. If you need to edit time or event you can go to the calendar if
not you may return back to the screen. As for the tasks, pressing the icon you
are put straight to the Tasks to look at them and to edit.

At one of the sites where we had great discussion with our users we were
strongly convinced by the advanced WM users that they definitely need quick
access to separate files. Therefore “Files” was added to the menu of the program
that affords you to add any file to the screen. Moreover, we’ve made a
possibility to switch off the lock screen.

Winterface now looks whiter as most of the standard icons were replaced by
super stylish winter-like icons. You will be amazed by the cool looks of your
Pocket PC screen.

Some of the bugs were fixed like: it is now impossible to delete Menu and
Running icons of the program, some of the icons are not doubled any more (like
Phone). The bug on HTC devices with battery icon was also fixed.
NOTE! If you need to backup your settings, you only should rename file pages.db
(for example, pages_old.db) in the Winterface folder. Then you should uninstall
the old version of Winterface, rename it back from pages_old.db to pages.db
after that install new version of the program. All other updates that are higher
than version 1.1 won’t need this operation as the program will do it itself.

Winterface is available for $19.95 at

Forgot to add, the new up and down motion you have to do in order to start Winterface is truly excruciating to activate. It takes me an average of 10 times to get it to read! This definately needs to be fixed.

    ISSUES with WINTERFACE

    1. Calendar- Does not show a semi-transparent background as stated on instructions. Just shows the regular WM background when clicked upon.

    2. Contacts- Does not show a semi-transparent background as stated on the instructions. Again, just shows the regular WM background when clicked upon.

    3. The Lock Screen- this is non-existant and does not work. Yes, I checked the Menu option and there is a check on the "lock screen" button. Screen does not lock!!! It

    doesn't even popup.

    4. Power Saving mode- Whenever my TILT goes into power saving mode and shuts off the screen and I activate the screen again to do something, WM 6 Today screen shows up and

not Winterface. This is VERY bothersome. This means everytime I want to do anything within Winterface, I ALWAYS have to activate it, over and over again.

NOTE: Power icon doesn't display battery life until I click on it. This should definately be added, but again is not really apart of my main problem.

After updating the ROM on my Tilt to the new AT&T WM 6.1 ROM I decided to load Winterface v1.11 again to see if it would work... lo and behold it did! But not for long. Seems that when I loaded my calendar data on the device Winterface choked on it and wouldn't start again. My guess is that the new feature that allows you to tap on the calendar icon to see upcoming events doesn't like something in my calendar data. I do have a lot of items on my calendar, but I wouldn't say there are anymore than an average business user.

I have sent information about this problem to Vito (again... see above post dated Aug. 13--with no response) and we'll see if they decide to do something with it.

    new update is awesome!
  • I've downloaded new versions with fixed bugs for Tilt/TyTn II.
    Will you try it?
  • Hello, guys!
    Thanks for great feedback!
Probably, we'll fix most of the bugs.

In my opinion Winterface is a waste of money. You're better off using Ifonz version 1.0.4 Easy to customize your apps and such. It's also very smooth.

Vito apps aren't that great. I think I'm using like one of their apps and this is coming from someone that load tons of apps on their phone. Step up your game Vito Tech. and maybe you can play on the same field as SPB.
  • Steve
I installed the new 1.1 version on my Tilt and it hangs up. I had to perform a soft-reset to get my device running again. Sent word to Vito... we'll see what happens. In the meantime I'm going back to v1.02.
  • Eric
By a weird twist of fate, I installed Winterface about 20 minutes before this was posted.

I agree with most everything Kristofer says above. I don't care either way regarding the colors, since I mixed a bunch of colored icons in there anyway.

I would still like to throw in my now standard blast from other forums that VITO's customer service is terrible.
  • So I got the new version installed now.. here's a couple quick observations:

1 - Battery Icon still leads to 'Sliding Sounds'
(talked with them about this before and it is something that is Tilt/TyTn II specific so it's not likely to change anytime soon)

2- Still no wrap-around with the interface itself

3- Clicking 'Settings' in the menu now does nothing at all

4- the new way to open the interface with the 'uptick' is actually more difficult than the old way of doing it...

5- Install app from Desktop while synced instead of xferring to phone to install.. personally I don't care for this, but other people might like it that way

6- Phone does not automatically lock when screen goes off, you now have choice to enable or disable the lock screen (this is a nice feature actually)

7- The ability to add other shortcuts is cool, for example you can now add a shortcut directly to your storage card

8- Many new icons added for several things, though I'm not sure I care for the whole black and white look of it, I happen to like a colorful screen
