Thoughts on the ROM update

It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

I love to test and use custom ROMs, and have not used an official ROM for many months, so I decided that I should try the new ROM, and see how it compared to the custom ROMs that I have been using, and I was pleasantly surprised, despite having the usual extra step to remove the bloat that AT&T decides that we need to clog up our otherwise nice ROMs, it is decently fast, and has many of the features that I had jumped ship to find. Kip has a excellent post with a very detailed description of the new Official ROM and how to remove the bloatware a couple posts below. There are a few reported bugs, such as the phone getting quite hot, and some are stating that the battery life is horrible, neither of which I have experienced. All in all this update seems like a great upgrade, however I will have to admit it, I am going to switch back to a cooked ROM in the next day or so. I just like the other ROMs better. I do not recommend that you try to flash your Tilt with a cooked (non-official) ROM unless you know what you are doing.

As for the installation walk through that I stated I would do, I had started to write one, and discovered a excellent and detailed one on HTC’s site that did the job much better than I could, so here is the link, Tilt ROM upgrade guide I only would add one bit to the instructions, and that is to remove your SIM card, any disruption to the update process can be disastrous, and I like to lower the chances as best as I can. I believe in Murphy and his Law because Murphy believes in me.

Happy Flashing!!

Kris

Awesome thanks a lot. I messed around with microsoft live search and now the GPS works but another program vito find me will not work. Now all I gotta do is get that working and everything will be just fine.
  • ^^ you can just pull up a name by saying their name.. but if you want to call... you have to say "Call name here" if they have several different numbers you can say Mobile, Work, home etc.. or it will ask you later..
  • Sean
What's the deal with the voice command program? I liked voice speed dial soo much better. When I say a name it comes up but doesn't dial the number. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to get that back on the tilt with winmo 6.1? Or is there another program like it?

Also I am having trouble with my GPS. Live Search will not locate my GPS position.

Other than that no problems yet, and I am using all of my old programs and they are working just fine

Still haven't fixed the sound problem. Called ATT they're sending me a replacement. The phone I flashed was brand new. I flashed the return phone with the update and I'm having problem getting apps to work on that one. I hope the replacement has 6.1 on it already.

I hard booted it (for the third time) and set it up using CWMX (for the fifth time) exactly the same as I'd done before and this time it works.

I really do wish someone would explain to me why on an AT&T device using the AT&T network to connect to an AT&T email account WHY this is such a pain.

    trouble with ringtones...

after updating my Tilt does not want to identify my own ringtones, anyone know what the deal is?
  • I installed this right away without any problems. I even put all the programs back on my phone that I had before.: Kaiser Tweak, UI Tweaker, HHC home Customizer, Google GPS maps, Streaming Video, SpB Pocket Plus and a couple more. Not one problem.
I noticed the battery Life lasts a lot longer for me now. I even have all my setting for the backlights to kickoff aroun 5 minutes... I used the phone all day and still have 73% life...
Although I tweaked it with Kaiser, and I also dim the light..

But so far, no problems, no heating up and everything seams to work for me...

Just great! Finally got Skyfire, SRS WOW, even found Tcpmp(not working for flash). took me 5 hours to get setup. I had to call ATT because phone didn't connect to internet. after all that....now phone has no sound! music, ringtones, sliding, etc,NADA! when I use the phone the sound comes out the speaker, even though it's not on.

I can't even get it on my phone. The device is connected to my PC and both my PC and my phone recognize each other but the software doesn't. With seeing some of the issues, I'm kinda glad I can't get it. Although, I was really looking forward to the threaded texts.

Ben... check out xda-developers forum. Seems like I did see a thread about TCPMP Flash video bundle for 6.1 or at least getting it to work.

I also got SRS WOW HD working from something over there. I don't have that thread handy, but am pretty sure it had WOW HD in the title. There's a post where someone included 2 files: a CAB and a ZIP with the CPL. Using that poster's instructions, it's working fine for me now.
  • Ben Hanchett
Okay, I re-download update today. Reflashed. Skyfire isn't working. Has anyone seen a TCPMP Flash video bundle for 6.1? The one I have isn't. WOW HD Settings give me the error no drivers installed must close now. Finally what are the Customization Tools and the Customization Customize Tool? HUH?

Why is there so much less Storage Memory with the new ROM?

    G. Edward Jones, for your email send issue, have you tried using "cwmx.com" as the SMTP server? (I also have both "Outgoing server requires authorization" and "Use the same username & password..." checked)

I had the same issue, until I found this on another forum. (ATT user forum, I think?) I don't recall reading this anywhere official, so if it's in a manual, I sure missed it.

Whether or not this fixes it for you, this is pretty stupid to have to do, IMHO. That is, this fix and any other basic setting, install CAB/fix, etc. that folks have to hunt high and low through various forums to figure out how to make something basic work...
  • Installed it last night. Promptly bricked my phone trying to restore my contacts and IMs from Sprite. After I got that sorted (that is to say, my stuff is still not restored, but my phone works). I found out that I can't send email through BellSouth's SMTP server. This seems to be a pretty common problem with 6.1 (regardless of carrier) and, as far as I can tell, no one has an actual solution.

    So, that's awesome.

I can get email, but I cannot send it.

    Great.

Tried to put the new ROM on my Tilt using Activesync. Said 'there's not enough disk space'.

The only thing on my phone currently are the preloaded applications and stuff that came with the Tilt when I got it. And also the Kaiser Tweak and Streaming Media.

Anyone have any ideas what I should do? Appreciate it.

I like the new update but can anyone tell me how does the video calling works?

    Johnny B :
Is it possible your 3G or wireless connection is always on ? That might cause it to become hot.. If so, try turning that off.. I face this issue when skyfire is on.. as skyfire does continuous network activity even if it's idle (another drawbacks of Skyfire I noticed).

For me everything seems to be working now - except I haven't re-installed skyfire and AC3 plugin for TCPMP is not working.. I am sure there must be a fix available on XDA for that.

Frankly speaking I haven't found anything worth spending the 3 hours doing ROM upgrade to WinMO 6.1

Any of you can suggest how this is helpful over earlier ROM ?
  • Appears to be an issue with Blackberry Connect- after upgrading to 6.1 and re-installing BBC, unable to re-register phone with network. Tried resending service books, etc. etc. no dice. Called ATT tech support who said that HTC says there is a compatibility issue on this device between WinMo 6.1 and BBC, and that they are working on a fix, expected to be available in "days." Nothing about the issue on the HTC website but Be Warned.

Also I suggest NOT using Sprite Backup; mine crashed my Tilt when I tried to run it and I had to manually reinstall apps and contacts.

Overall not worth the trouble. I think I'm done with HTC handsets. Don't know if they've bitten off more than they can chew but between this, general WinMo6 sluggishness, and lack of reliable push email, I'm going back to BlackBerries; the new Bold looks very nice :-) .

I loaded last night (including AT&T bloatware). All seems to work pretty well, except I can no longer connect to a network share in File Explorer (via wi-fi connection). I can see the Internet, so the wi-fi is working, but when I try Menu/Go To/Open Path/ New Path and try to open a shared folder (e.g., "\\MyDesktop\SharedFolder"), I get an error that connection settings are wrong. I played with the connection settings but to no avail. I never had this problem on the previous AT&T ROM. If anyone has suggestions, they would be appreciated.
  • Dennis
Loaded the ROM yesterday with no issues. This morning I found it to be unresponsive. It will no longer connect to active sync and continusly reboots after a reset. Can't do anything with it. :(
  • Kris
Hmm, there seems to be lots of problems, I actually did not encounter those, admittedly I did not use TCPMP so I can't comment on that, and my call quality was fine, I can't say as to why the expierence is so varied, except it might be the SPL that is on the phone at the time of the upgrade, mine was hardspl 3.56, and that may have helped.
  • dragonwen
everything went great, except the gps, which is the one I use all the time, sucks. Hopefully I will find a way to get it working again.
  • Type1fan
No major problems here other then the fact that I can no longer play 3gp files in windows media player. Looking for a work around that as we speak.
  • Piperpilot
Other than the annoyance of having to do a fresh installation of all my apps, I haven't noticed any problems with the update. The issue of the phone being hot if left on has always been an issue with my phone, so that's nothing new. I did notice, however, that Opera mobile 9.5 beta is slower and much less stable with the new ROM. I am thinking about uninstalling it and going back to Opera Mobile 8.65.
  • btate0121
I hope im not speaking too soon here.. but so far so good for me! *shrug*.. I dont use a lot of the programs you guys mentioned above. Sorry to hear that you guys are having so much trouble. I will probably jump to a cooked rom as soon as ones with this build start popping up. But im pretty satisfied for now.
  • Johnny B
i am having 3 issues that i found already with minimal use. one is when i use my device for whatever reason for longer than 15 minutes it starts to get real hot. 2nd is the voice quality is low and has some weird mulled echo. 3rd is my gps program is not working, have not a problem with my gps with any cooked roms. and this is just with minimal use i dl the update last night and have only played with it for about 3 hrs.

Not happy at all.. TCPMP stopped working.. .. and I don't see any big advantages..

An fix for the TCPMP issue ?
  • patrickem
I can't even get the new ROM to install. I click on the file and it crashes right away, not even a second later.

Kaiser has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
  • jagooch
Patrickem - I had the same problem and , silly as it sounds, I discovered that when I downloaded it using Firefox ( 3.5 ) it corrupted the file, but when I used IE ( 8 ) it worked fine.

    Give it a shot!
