A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Upgrading to the new ROM

Hello TiltSite! My name is Kris, and I was quite lucky to be chosen by Chris to be one of the new blogger’s, THANKS CHRIS, and I decided that I should start off my bloggership on this site with a series in anticipation of the new AT&T update to WM 6.1 and I figured it would be prudent to start by providing you with a list of items you will need to successfully navigate the upgrade process.

There are two major things to do before you install the update (besides downloading it), with the biggest being backing up your Tilt. When you upgrade your Tilt you will lose all of your software, call logs, contacts, EVERYTHING. Before upgrading my Tilt I use two programs to back up my Tilt, Sprite Backup (already on your Tilt) and Dotfred’s PIM backup ( www.dotfred.net ) which is free. Sprite Backup saves everything, so if the upgrade process goes awry you can easily go back to WM6 with out losing anything. The PIM backup saves just that, your call logs, text messages, contacts etc. This way after you upgrade you can immediately restore all those numbers that you don’t bother to remember because you have them saved on your Tilt. I only know 4 maybe five of the several dozen numbers on my Tilt. How many do you know? Please backup your files onto either a storage card or your PC not your Tilt!! I would not be pleasant to upgrade your Tilt only to find out you don’t have your iphone fanboy cousin’s number to call and brag about it to them.

The second major thing that you need to do is ensure you have a full charge on your Tilt, it does not charge while the ROM is being uploaded, and you can brick your phone if you run out of power.

I will post a walk through explaining how to update your Tilt tomorrow, in the mean time, have a great evening!

Ok so I figured out what our problem was...Firefox. I ran the ROM on another older PC and the wizard opened right up. At first I thought it might have been XP Service Pack 3 so I uninstalled it but the RUU still would not open.

Then I realized that I downloaded the ROM on the other computer using IE6. My PC Has Firefox 3. Somehow downloading a file with Firefox is not the same as downloading it with IE?! Never had that problem before with Firefox and I'm pretty sure I won't ever again. So yeah if you have troubles running the 6.1 upgrade and you hate IE like I do, you're just going to have to suck it up.

Anyone out there download it with Firefox and still get it to work? I'd love to hear it.

You would think that whether you use BitTorrent, FTP, IE, or Firefox to download that a file is a file is a file as long as the KB is the same and all that but I guess not. Strange.

    Hope this helped someone.

My friend and I are both having trouble. We downloaded the ROM today (and the one HTC pulled from their site a week and a half ago) and when we try to open the RUU it does nothing. On my friend's screen he gets the Error Report, I don't even get that.

Everyone else seems to have no problem at all. Anyone else have this problem? I've flashed ROMs before so I know how to do it but this .exe just won't open.

I'm running Media Center and my friend has XP Home.

Please help I'm going slightly insane.

    Thanks

    Thank you...

I will be trying it toninght...
  • I think someone ought to get this up on a torrent at some point, this download speed is ridiculous, I think every single Tilt user must be downloading at this exact moment.
  • EGD

Just talked to HTC again and was told by the rep that it was supposed to be up by now but they havent done it yet...and it might still come out today just keep checking
  • David
i was on the phone with HTC last night and the guy said "all i can say is that it will be out very soon" i asked if it does come out today the 26th he said "around 8-9am east coast time...not out yet...wtf?
  • Vikas
Where is the new ROM ? didn't find it on HTC's website...
  • KCMatt
I sync all my Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Emails through ActiveSync via Microsoft Exchange, so backing them up isn't necessary. And loading this new ROM will give me a good reason to take a look at all the programs I have on my Tilt and only keep the ones I really use. I've got my pictures on the MicroSD card.

So all I'd really like to copy over after the upgrade are all my old text messages (I guess). Is there an easy way to do this, like copying a folder to the card and putting it back after the ROM upgrade?
  • kk
So, where's the promised ROM update? Toaday is 26th!
  • Derrick
What about the rising number of us users that cannot sync with a pc because of activesync problems?
  • Wan Hung Lo
Looks like HTC is either going to pull another "Website Glitch" excuse or they're changing their website to accomodate the new ROM right now. I tried hitting the website and clicking on the ATT link under PRODUCTS, but it's not there. Even had a brand new machine and tested it with that (Thinking I may have a caching problem) but nope...

the news just gets better and better hahaha
  • Kris
Activesync, or Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista will reload your software, from the add/remove programs function. This will not restore your reg codes for your programs, just the files themselves.
  • Eddie
Oh yeah, I forgot all about the windows aspect of loading the programs. Duh. Everything installed on the device shows up in activesync right? (I ask this as I'm turning around to check myself).
  • Jack
No pim will not back up programs!
But whats wrong with good old active sync i flash my roms often and thats all I use for backup it does most of my programs also. for the ones that dont i save them as a cab file in a special folder.
  • Eddie
I've never actually upgraded the rom on the tilt before (or anything else for that matter). does pim backup restore your software? or do I need to start compiling a list of software I use haha.
