B.Y.O.R. (Bring Your Own Ringtone)

If you haven’t figured it out from my first two posts, I kinda like to write “how To’s”. This week I figured I would write up a post on how to make some custom ringtones from youtube videos for your WinMo device.
Truth be told, this can be used for any phone that can play a standard MP3 as a ringtone (read: pretty much any standard cell phone except for the iPhone), but I figured since this works well on the Tilt, this is something that people ask me about on occasion, and I needed something to write about, I would fire this article up.
First off I’m going to assume a few things first to make this simple. I am going to assume that you know how to change the sound notifications on your device. I’m not going to go into that. I am also going to assume that you know a bit about using the internet (after all, you found this site). I also don’t want to get into a discussion about copyright or anything like that. I am not suggesting you pirate anything, and I take no responsibility for your actions. If the Feds come a knockin’, don’t tell them that I said it was O.K.
Alright, lets get started. (after the break)
First, we need to find something you want to hear every time your Work calls you. I like this for work:
- Get the web address for the video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_WERPN8KO8)
- Go to Vixy (http://vixy.net) (There are a number of other sites you can use, this is just the one I picked and use).
- Paste the URL into the URL field in the Vixy website
- In the “converts to” field, select “MP3 (audio only)
- Click Start. This process is not instant, and depending on your choice of video, it could take a number of minutes to complete, be patient)
- When prompted, save the file.
That’s pretty much it. once you have the MP3 file, you can copy it to your phone and use it as the ringtone.
You will likely need to edit the audio file once you get it, maybe trim off some of the clip or maybe increase the gain. I find that, for windows, a good FREE! program for this is Audacity. You can grab Audacity from sourceforge (click here).
Let us know how it goes. Also, I’d like to see some of the videos or hear some of the audio you’ve picked, post them in the comments below.
Thanks for reading…. Kip
