Dark Days for Palm

It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

palm-treo-pro-combo After the almost physically painful announcement that Palm lost a whopping 41.9 million dollars last quarter, some even more disappointing news is coming out of Palm HQ.

It appears that the next generation Linux based OS that Palm has been promising to have ready to show off any day now will still be here any day….any day in 2009. Palm CEO Ed Colligan quietly let slip that the new OS won;t be appearing until the first half of 09, which is industry code for Spring, read Mid-2009. Considering how fast this industry moves, that may as well be never. Hell, there will likely be a 4G iPhone and Android Mark 2 by then. Most analysts had been expecting the OS to be out at the beginning of 09 in a worst case scenario. No word yet on what handsets will be running the new OS, or when we will be seeing those. Am I insane to be holding out a secret hope for Treo Pro II?

After selling more then a million Centros in the Quarter, and enjoying a strong critical reception in the industry (their first in ages) for the new Treo Pro many Palm fans such as myself were hoping to see a small resurgence in the once mighty mobile device company. No such luck.

Considering they sold a million of the little buggers and STILL lost that much, I believe they are making no profit at all on the Centros, cutting the margin to the bone to make that 99 buck price point. They may even be losing money on the deal. Is it worth it?

On the one hand, it could be a good move to at least keep the company’s name on the street, and to have a hit phone to show off. However, 41.9 million is a lot to spend on good buzz while you wait for the new OS to be ready.

All I can say is Palm II OS (Codenamed Nova) had better be absolutely frickin INCREDIBLE.
