Such a simple, but good tip for new Windows Mobile 6.1 users. Fellow Microsoft MVP, Linley Meslier shares this simple tip.

…With Windows Mobile 6.1, this is now possible. Simply click on Start > Settings. Click 3 times on More and the “Device name” option will appear. Reboot the device after the change is done.

His post is for a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (Smartphone Edition), but thanks to Billy Adams for sharing the steps for a Pro Device.

If you go to Start > Settings > System > About > and then click on the “Device ID” tab. You can change it there. It will take a little bit to load.

Now you can name your Tilt that Pet Name you always wanted to. I might call mine “Paris Hilton”. Don’t ask me why though.

  • well,I have been having a problem getting bluetooth file share to work since 6.1 "Failed" In my trials to get it to work,I deleted the tilt from the device list in my wife's phone. When I repaied the devices,It chose the device name,Not the owner name for ID on her list.(?) I still can't get bluetooth file share to work :-(
  • I was able to do that before 6.1 I was also able to do that on my 8125. I will verify that tonight when I go home.(I still have It and My Nokia 3650) However, file share over bluetooth choses my first name from Owner info to Id the device now after 6.1. In 6 it chose the device ID for bluetooth name. That was my experience.

Umm... the Tilt is a Pro device ... not Standard.

Those instructions would work on a Samsung BlackJackII or a Motorola Q
  • If you go to Start > Settings > System > About > and then click on the "Device ID" tab. You can change it there. It will take a little bit to load.
