Looks like form following function. If I didn't know better I'd say Google designed it; it has a business like utilitarian look.

I think a lot of people might be missing the point of this phone. The way I see it, it's purely a device to showcase what Android is capable of and something to help developers make applications for the platform. I'm sure there will be device at a later stage that will appeal to general consumers more (look better), but this won't be it.

This is the first device that developers will get to test their applications on, so it has included virtually every form of input available (Touchscreen, qwerty keyboard, trackball, d pad, accelerometer) so they can get their applications working on any future device that may come.

I think google always intended for this device to be a developers phone, but others have been the ones to flag this as Android's flagship phone with comparisons to the iPhone and others.

Personally, I am excited about what this phone (and future android phones) will bring to the phone market. I've been using Windows Mobile devices for years now and love the flexibility of apps and customisation for it. However, I appreciate the ease of use that the iPhone brings to touchscreen devices, but Apple restrict it too much for my liking.

Hope this is the logical explanation you were looking for :)

I don't think that it's "ugly", at least no more than the Samsung Omnia or Sony Ericsson Xperia are. I like Adam's description of "lackluster" better.

Plus, ugly or not, it seems <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/10/12/1-5-million-t-mobile-g1s-already-pre-ordered/" rel="nofollow">T-Mobile has 1.5 million pre-orders</a>. Not too shabby for an ugly phone on the 4th U.S. carrier.

Your right, it is ugly. The term I often here is "lack-luster" and being the first device to hit the market I want to be more impressed with its features than I am with the iPhone. I may be too cheap to buy an iPhone but it looks damn fine.
