Some interesting tidbits about upcoming Asus Eee models are being reported on Digitimes.
First and foremost, several models with touch panel screens are expected in the Q1/09 according to Samson Hu, general manager of Eee PC business at Asustek. Hu can;t say what models will have the touch screens, but indicated they would be based on market demand, and that Asus was expecting the touch screen models to be big sellers…therefore I would expect to see them on either the most popular, or least popular models. Hu also said they will be showcasing the touch screen Eees at CES 2009. (Jan 8-11 in Vegas).
To top off that little gen, Hu also tipped that dual core Atom based Eees will be out as soon as they can get the chips from Intel
Finally, Asus president Jerry Shen also revealed that another low cost Eee will be coming soon, priced around $299 or below in 2009. This is very welcome news to those of us who have bemoaned the Eee line going further and further away from it’s budget roots.
I am happy to see some cheaper models since I feel low price was a key element of the Eee initial success, the other announcements raise more questions for me, however. I am unsure why a Netbook NEEDS the power of a dual core chip…maybe for video. It raises battery life and heat concerns however.
Beyond that, touch screens? Cool, but…since the small keyboard is a core element of the netbook experience why do you need a touch screen…unless these are going to be TABLET Eees.
Hmmmm.
