Redfly in action– Smartphone terminal design enhanced with affordable, light-weight, power-saving features and a new media port for video input –

Wouldn’t you know it, one of my favorite gadgets now has added functionality!  Ever since I received my unit, I’ve been using the Redfly just a bit more than my Aspire One – heck I prefer to use it more than full-fledged Outlook at times!  And we all know Jack, our Senior Editor had positive reviews for it early on as well.  Now the latest version, the C8N boasts an additional media port to make it available for use with the Zune (ya’ hear that Chris?), the iPod, and digital cameras (the latter being a “- but honey…” factor no doubt) for $299.  In addition to the lineup, a revamped smaller version, the C7 (with a smaller screen and battery), is also available for $229, just in time for the holidays.

Were any of you readers out there able to take advantage of the $199 deal for the previous C8 model?  If so I’d like to hear from you on how you use it. You can check out Matt Miller’s Impressions here as well.

More press release details after the break…

“SALT LAKE CITY – November 18, 2008 – Celio Corp (www.celiocorp.com), the maker of the REDFLY Smartphone Terminal, today unveiled two new models: the REDFLY C7 and REDFLY C8N. The REDFLY series of products are smartphone terminals designed to offer the mobile workforce a larger keyboard and screen for easy use of e-mail, web, business applications, remote access and cloud computing resources. The REDFLY C7 is a new, more affordable model with a power-saving seven-inch display, light-weight five-hour battery, and feather-light design under 1.5 lbs. The REDFLY C8N is the next evolution of the original REDFLY design, enhanced to allow the use of the eight-inch screen by an iPod™, iPhone ™, Zune™, or digital camera. These new Celio products continue to support the smartphone, the most successful mobile computing platform available today, and enable the smartphone’s Internet-based and cloud-computing applications.

Available the week of December 1, 2008, REDFLY C7 and C8N can be pre-ordered today from select Celio resellers listed at www.getredfly.com for a suggested retail price of $229 and $299 respectively.

“REDFLY has taken off in the smartphone market and these new models are designed to extend this success,” said Kirt Bailey, CEO of Celio Corp. “The REDFLY’s larger keyboard and screen brings the right functionality to the smartphone, making it the netbook of choice without the additional TCO (total cost of ownership) and data loss risk of a UMPC or laptop. Combined with the REDFLY device, the smartphone has become the center of mobile virtualization and mobile cloud-based computing.” The REDFLY C7 is the result of a customer-driven plan for a power-efficient, lightweight and more affordable solution. With a power-saving seven-inch display and power-efficient features, the REDFLY C7 uses a lightweight battery that provides up to five-hours of performance, perfect for many mobile users. The REDFLY C7 weighs less than 1.5 lbs., lighter than any mobile computer with a seven-inch display.   The REDFLY C8N evolved from the original REDFLY design to meet overwhelming customer demand to use the larger screen as an external display for media players such as an iPod, iPhone , Zune, or digital camera. A new REDFLY Media Port and REDFLY Media Cable provide a simultaneous connection as a third USB port and composite video input (NTSC/PAL compatible). Now the REDFLY’s 800×480-pixel screen can be used to view photos, show demos and even watch movies. The REDFLY Media Cable is available for a suggested retail price of $19.95. Available the week of December 1, 2008, the REDFLY C7 and C8N Smartphone Terminals can be pre-ordered today from select Celio resellers listed at www.getredfly.com including: Amazon.com; Enterprise Mobile; Expansys; MyTreo.net; Treonauts.com and WMexperts.com. I took advantage of the $199 price and got a Redfly C8. Considering the C7 has a smaller screen and smaller battery, but costs $30 more, I think it was a good deal. (By the way, they had extended the deal until 11/17, but as that was yesterday, it won't help anybody here.)

When I first read about the "media port" on the C8N, I thought it was an output for displaying your device on a regular TV, not an input. I think adding the input is a great idea, although I wonder how video will scale to the higher-resolution screen (aren't most iPods and Zunes 320x240)? Will you see a picture that's 2.5 times as blocky?
