A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Spinn11 Well, the need for a new gadget got the better of me this weekend, and as they just arrived in stores here a few days ago, I had to take the plunge on the new iRiver SPINN. I have been a fan of iRiver for ages now, still using my old 6Gig H20 every now and again. As a brand they have fallen somewhat behind the pack lately just because they hadn’t really put out a new product to rival the new iPod Touch and Nanos or Zune 2s…until now. iRiver has always specialized in smaller capacity devices with top quality features…and usually top dollar price, and thus far the SPINN does not disappoint.

This new MP3/PMP from iRiver stands out from the crowd due to a 3.2 inch AMOLED touch screen, haptic response, FM radio and voice recording (also the ability to record straight off the radio), more music and video codec support then you can shake a standards guide at, stereo Bluetooth support and a very slick little analog wheel in place of the somewhat tired touchpad.

After the jump see some comparison shots and initial impressions.

Spinn1

In the clear package, with nothing to hide. Very well presented.

Spinn2

The device itself.

Spinn3

Just the bare bones in the box…USB cable, sort of goofy looking headphones (white? dear Gawd WHY??), mini CD and quick start guide.

Spinn4

Oh dear, not ANOTHER proprietary connector…

Spinn5

Side by side with the iPod Touch 8G…though they look from above to be roughly equivalent the iPod is noticeably larger and heavier in the hand.

Spinn6

Thickness comparison between the SPINN and the iPod Touch. The iPod is a little slimmer, and feels even more so due to the curves. Width wise the SPINN feels much smaller in the hand, which is both a good and a bad thing for manly men such as myself.

Spinn7

Size comparison between the Zune 2 80, iPod Touch, SPINN and iRiver H20.

Spinn8

Thickness comparison, from bottom to top…Zune, iPod Touch, H20, SPINN. Not the somewhat flimsy feeling USB connector cover on the SPINN.

Spinn9

The picture quality on the SPINN. This picture does not do it justice. It is easily the best screen on any small device I own. Simply breathtaking, crisp and clean with great depth.

Spinn10

Picture quality comparison, Zune, iPod Touch and SPINN. Again, poor quality picture but in my never terribly humble opinion the quality order goes 1 – SPINN, 2 Zune, 3 iPod.

Initial impression of the SPINN GUI is that it is very clean and appealing. The Haptic response feels like a small dental drill going off when I touch a button which gets heavily on my nerves, so I already switched it off. Now I am off to install the software, check the sync, set up a Bluetooth headphones connection and begin checking the sound quality…expect a full review later in the week.

Thanks Zealot! Truly appreciate the input. I'll take it off my gadget collection.

Funny, here I've had my 4700 for 4 years, and it still is my best bet for decent quality handheld video. Incredible.

From what I've heard the much ballyhoo'ed Cowon and Q5 also choke on too many video formats. That leaves only Archos now. I tried the previous generation 605 and it was a disappointment. We'll see how the new Archos 5 does.

I don't see the point why they make the 4GB

gylman, i know some guys which will ship to Canada, check this out. They're good.

gylman...first test shows that the device automatically converts down to the lower resolution on sync. What's more, it doesn't even see files that aren't in .avi, so I needed to convert an mp4 to avi first using another app, THEN had the iRiver software convert it to the proper resolution while syncing. Total turnaround to get a very small Iron Man onto my Spinn - 2+ hours. Shellhead would not be happy. First video impression is that quality was acceptable for the size, but sure not up to a 4700. If you are looking for a pocketsized video player first and foremost, this may not be your first choice. I will test some more to see. At least the sync was pretty intuitive...more on that later.

Ben - word is that a 16G version is coming, with a rumor of 32G in the future...so you may be in luck.

I’m a huge fan of Iriver and have been constantly upgrading my Iriver players every time they come out with something hot and new. I started off with the Iriver 899 1GB moved on to the T10 2GB from there the Clix 4GB then the Iriver Clix second generation 8GB. I would love to get the Spinn but I need at least a 16GB to help me. My Iriver Clix 8GB is almost full so getting the Spinn will not help me unless the up the capacity. I hope they will in the near future as I would be all over the Spinn.

Great review. I love my iphone but always keep my eyes on gadgets I may want to add to my collection.

As usual, can't buy this in Canada. Too bad, looks like a good one for the gadget collection.

One question re: the video. Does it automatically play higher-res video without difficulty? Or do we have to encode everything to 480x272.

I have become accustomed to 640x480 on my HX4700, and I'm thinking this will be a step down... can you compare the video quality to looking at the same video on a true VGA handheld?

Nice job! Love the comparisons. I'm looking forward to reading more about it. I'll stay tuned!
