It’s a small market initially, but it could lead to the future of boarding passes as well as other ideas that could spawn from this idea. Right now, its only Chicago O’Hare, LAX, and Santa Ana John Wayne airports that are doing this, but if it’s successful, I am sure more airports will be added.

American Airlines customers departing from select airports can choose to receive their boarding passes electronically on their mobile phones or PDAs, saving the time it takes to print out and present a paper boarding pass at the airport.

Mobile boarding passes, which use a two-dimensional (2-D) barcode, are being introduced today for passengers departing on domestic flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. On Nov. 17, mobile boarding passes will be offered as an option for customers departing on domestic flights from Los Angeles International (LAX) and John Wayne Orange County (SNA) airports as well.

From American Airlines Website

When you are traveling on select itineraries from Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Los Angeles International (LAX) and Santa Ana John Wayne/Orange County (SNA) airports, you now have the option to have your boarding pass sent directly to your mobile phone or other mobile device – saving paper and time. Eligible itineraries include non-stop flights with only one passenger listed in the record locator*. Follow the easy steps below for your next applicable flight from ORD, LAX or SNA:

How to use the new Mobile Boarding Pass

  1. Check in on AA.com (or AA.com Mobile). Choose “Email for use on Cell Phone or other Mobile Device” option and include the e-mail address for your web-enabled mobile phone and/or mobile device.
  2. Check your email from your mobile device. Follow the link on the email to retrieve your Mobile Boarding Pass.
  3. Save the boarding pass to your device. Click the “Save Boarding Pass” button directly below the barcode to save it to your phone for easy access at the security checkpoint (check your phone/PDA manual to locate where the Boarding Pass will save).
  4. Proceed to Security. When you arrive at security, make sure the entire barcode is visible on the screen of your mobile phone or mobile device and have the backlight setting set to the brightest mode possible. If you have any problems, you will be given the opportunity to print a paper boarding pass at the self-service machines.

The new boarding pass will be available for Chicago O’Hare outbound flights starting on November 13 and Los Angeles and John Wayne outbound flights starting on November 17.

Alaska is doing the same test at some airports including seattle. Have not tried yet but will try in 3 weeks when I fly.

AA did a similar program where your AAdvantage card (with a barcode for Gold, Plats and ExecPlat) was used to board you at the gate - this was PRE 9/11 so no ID or BP for security. It worked well and when they read your card a "reciept" would print with your seat assignment - don't know what they are doing here. I fly AA from Orange County next week so will report.

I hope they also include the seat number in plain text form. How else can you prove that you're in the correct seat (at least without getting a flight attendant involved, assuming they have scanners)?
