My top 5 Favorite iPhone apps (this week)

This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.Gil’s iPhone post inspired me to list a few of my recent favorite applications for iPhone. It is a list that changes frequently, as there seem to be many new applications available on an almost daily basis.
GOOGLE EARTH. Fascinating. Works great. GPS works so fast that I think to myself every time it opens—"What would people 300 years ago think of this little thing if they saw it."
Indeed, would they faint, would they cry out with joy… nah, they would probably burn me at the stake as a heretic for having it in my possession. At least I would know, within 3 meters, the location of my final resting place.
I digress. What I mean to point out is that the WYSIWYG-ness of this thing is super fun and FUN is what I tend to think it is best suited for. If I want directions to a place, then regular old Google Maps seems the quickest and most intuitive way to get directions, but if I want to look for the satellite image of the sandstone model of the Parthenon in Nashville, TN (and believe me, I look up things like that ) it’s way more fun on Google Earth for some reason. Plus Google Earth can keep your kids busy, when you are out at a public event or restaurant that they find boring.
FACEBOOK. If you are a social media junkie, the Facebook application for iPhone is a must-have. It is loaded with features and is intuitive. Sometimes I think I prefer it to the actual web site. You can check status updates, scroll thru friends’ pictures, upload your own pictures, all with the flick of a finger.
SPORTS TAP. Comprehensive list of all events in the sporting world. I was happy to see that world soccer leagues are listed right along with NFL, NHL, NCAA. Works great in conjunction with ESPN SMS score alerts, for keeping tabs on matches and events while you are stuck somewhere without access to a TV or computer—like during meetings when you are at work.
STANZA. It’s a great little e-book reader and the app itself comes with access to many classic novels. At the time of this writing, I am 8 chapters into 1984, by George Orwell. I know, I know… I was supposed to have read that in eighth grade, but alas, I didn’t, so I am reading it now. Plus, now I can read in the dark.
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. There is an app that contains scans of the document, but also a transcription. When I read it, it’s kind of like I hear the theme song to Rocky in my head, and I’m serious. I find it to be a very moving and stirring piece of literature. Download the app. Read it when you are feeling sorry for yourself. Read it before you go out to jog. Read it before you go to pitch that client presentation. Seriously folks, if you have never read it… READ IT. It puts a little perspective on the bravery and well, cojones, the Founding Fathers had in order to risk their fortunes to fight for our great nation. When I read it, I try to paraphrase outdated phrases like "all men" to be "all people", but other than that it’s a classic. That last paragraph is killer.
WHOA… where did THAT little tirade come from. Well, never mind my melodramatic ramblings about The Founding Fathers, and just get the app because it’s free.
