iPhone people, ignore this post. I don’t wanna hear it. :)

So, yeah… Can your browser do this? No? Skyfire can help you! Mobilitysite and Skyfire have teamed up and spread the word about this innovative browser. Jack and others have shared info about Skyfire already, but look at the rendering below… It deserves another post.

Skyfire is the only way you can watch all the videos I post here on your phone.  In fact, all of the multimedia here is viewable on your phone – and it will appear exactly like it does on the desktop. Unlike any other browser, Skyfire delivers speedy page loads, full audio, images and videos.

Check out Skyfire, a free downloadable browser available for Windows Mobile phones and Nokia N or E-Series (3rd Edition) phones in the US.  Just go to skyfire.com to get the download.  Read on for some FAQs about Skyfire…

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about Skyfire…

Q: What is Skyfire?
A: Skyfire, a free downloadable browser, is the industry’s only mobile browser that delivers both the speed and media-rich experience similar to the PC browser. It breaks through the consumer pain points that stifle Internet consumption on mobile phones by providing access to any web site built with any web technology at speeds comparable to a typical PC. To read more or watch a video, visit our website at www.skyfire.com.

Q: Who is Skyfire?
A: Skyfire was founded in April 2006 by Nitin Bhandari and Erik Swenson, who serve as CEO and CTO respectively. Skyfire is backed by Lightspeed Ventures, Matrix Partners, and Trinity Ventures. The company is based in Mountain View, Calif.

Q: What makes Skyfire different?
A: It’s not about the browser, it’s about the browsing. The web on your PC is not just static HTML anymore. Unlike many other popular mobile browsers, Skyfire supports all the modern web technologies so users can watch any video, listen to any music, stay connected on any social network, and browse anything they want without delays, missing content or error messages. Skyfire provides predictable access, speed, and a user experience designed to delight mobile users.

Q: What Web technologies does Skyfire support?
A: Skyfire support the same web technologies that PC browsers support such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, Ajax, QuickTime, Java, Windows Media, and more.

Q: What types of video does Skyfire support?
A: Skyfire supports embedded Flash, Quicksilver, QuickTime, Windows Media and more. We are constantly increasing our support as we come out with new versions.

Q: What mobile phones does Skyfire support?
A: Currently, Skyfire runs on Windows Mobile (5 or 6) mobile phones as well as Symbian Series 60 (3rd edition) phones which include the Nokia E and N series phones. To read more about the phones we support and regions where we are active, please see About our Beta Program.

Q: Is Skyfire free?
A: It’s a free to download-and-use browser.

Q: How can I get Skyfire?
A: Just go to www.skyfire.com/register to get the free download.

Q: How is Skyfire able to render the PC Web?
A: Skyfire’s proprietary technology enables us to support the real web both now and in the future as the new web technologies are implemented. We have created a brand new architecture that’s server assisted. It’s an approach where the server does the heavy lifting so the client is high performing.

I've tried Skyfire and there are a couple of things you should be aware of.

First, if you're using a Redfly, Skyfire doesn't seem to work (maybe there's a video driver conflict because both Skyfire and Redfly display an on-screen cursor). Too bad, because that might be the best of both worlds.

Second, read Skyfire's terms and conditions carefully. Because this is a proxy browser, they can monitor a lot of your browsing history.

Even given its limitations - yes, you are proxying through their servers - it is still miles better than IE, and, if you have a non-touchscreen smartphone, really better than Opera Mobile, too (I have not tried the beta version of the new OM since it does not run on WM smartphones yet.)

I still go back and forth on which I like better - Skyfire or Opera Mini.

does it work with a standalone pda yet? what about Vga? doesn't it go through their servers So its not really browsing like the Iphone or Opera. Considering the last fact, if their server goes down, so does your Browsing. am I wrong?
  • As part of the beta program... I can concur that it's a killer mobile browser! Flash support is great.
