$52,000??? Dang! Shoulda Got Prepaid!
This post was published 10 months 18 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.OUCH!! Mobilesyrup posted an article about an MTS Allstream customer that got a bill for 52 large.
Winnipeg business owner says Alan Davison his monthly bill went from $500 to more than $52,000 due to a hacker using his number to make calls to Bulgaria. He contacted MTS to inform them of the issue but MTS spokesman Greg Burch said that MTS will accept responsibility if their equipment was involved, However, in this case it wasn’t and his phone bill is due January 2nd.
There have actually been a lot of stories of people getting ridiculous bills because they either didn’t read the not-so-fine print or, as in this case, they were victimized.
While I feel bad for this guy with his massive bill I can see where MTS would be in a pickle. I think they should reverse the charges if the claim is credible but they are no doubt on the hook for a portion of that $52,000; they would have charges from other carriers that routed these calls. The point is valid that there should be a cap on accounts unless otherwise stated by the user.
This is exactly why I try my best to avoid monthly plans. There are too many scenarios where monthly billings can be way too high, even if that is just a few hundred more than normal. Most of the time I stick with prepaid, as long as I can get cheap data at the same time (with Virgin Mobile right now).
