Will Nobody Shed a Tear?

Palm is making the news and not in a way they care to. Reports are in that revenues will be much lower than anticipated due to low Treo sales. The sad part is nobody cares, except for those Palm employees who may lose their jobs and the few remaining investors who didn’t get out already. I guess it’s a sign of the Palm times when the typical news about Palm is when they announce "another new color for the Centro!". It’s like throwing a hot press conference and nobody comes.
How did it get to this point??
As with many of you, I can remember the glory days of Palm and how unstoppable they seemed to be. The Palm devices were just simple and right. Somewhere along the line Palm lost that shine and it is to the detriment of us consumers.
Yes, the current Palm devices are very well made but it seems that while the engineering department still knows what they are about the company as a whole has no direction. At this point Palm is just an engineering design company. The Centro uses their OS but it is mainly good because it is inexpensive. Their flagship, the Treo Pro using Windows Mobile OS, so can they really call it their own? It isn’t what made Palm…Palm.
I love the Treo Pro but Palm really needs to take things in a specific direction. If they want to be a design company (nothing wrong with that!) they need to stop wasting money on software for a dead platform. If they are going to truly remake Palm they need to do some amazing backflips.
Only time will tell, but my guess is that Palm is rather short on that. Lets hope they get things figured out.
