I think we all know why it came to this. Palm rested on their laurels, dismissing much of what Windows CE (later Pocket PC and Windows Mobile) did better (multitasking, media playing, Web browsing, etc.). They also thrashed around a lot, spinning off PalmSource, buying it back, selling it to ACCESS, trying to develop a new OS (was that Cobalt or Garnet?) and now trying to develop Nova.

Unless Nova is something super special and very close to market, I think they'd be better off doing what HTC is doing -- designing phones based on a standard OS and improving the user interface.

Microsoft has been resting on their laurels for too long as well. Fortunately for them, they're much bigger than Palm, but they also have to fight Apple, Google Android and a renewed RIM BlackBerry (and possibly Symbian). I just hope they've developed the cliched "sense of urgency" necessary to do it.
