Z-Day Hits Zune 30s

zune_latest_range1 In a story that is all over the net already, it appears a strange malady is hitting many if not all first generation Zune 30s. At some point on Dec 31 (no word if there is a specific time that is most common or if the time is even relevant), they are resetting and then freezing up with the progress bar stuck at full, becoming immediate bricks. The Zune cannot be hard reset from the Zunepad as it is locked up so you are left with a Zune logo glowing on a doorstop. There is a process for cracking it open and manually resetting it by breaking and restoring the connection to the battery that is making it’s way through the Zune fanboy forums, but just reading it made me wince and want to cross my legs. Some people are also saying letting the battery drain completely may also solve the problem but no confirmation on that.

No idea how or why this is happening…but it is now pretty clear that it may be one of the most comprehensive and widespread tech snafus ever.

For now, all those people affected can do is wait for MS to come up with a fix once the New Years holiday is passed. Needless to say, this is another blackeye for MS in the MP3 market and a massive headache for Microsoft’s skeleton support staff stuck covering the holiday. Sorry guys.

On the bright side (beyond the fact that my Zune 80 is running fine), for the first time in forever Zune has the top 4 Google search spots, with Zune frozen, reset Zune, Zune locked up and Zune troubleshooting.

Sigh.

(Thanks to Andrew Girdwood for the Google info)

  • Well, looks like mine has become a real brick! It will not boot up. I let the battery drain on Saturday night and today Monday morning I connected it to my PC. When it charged just enough to boot, it started just fine. Then it reset, and got stuck. It's been doing that since Jan 1st. I've tried doing it a few minutes after the battery gets drained, I've also tried a few hours, and I just finished trying a lil more than 24 hrs. Ugh!
  • Well well. Glad to see someof you have gotten your Zunes back, but mine is still frozen. I let the Zune battery die last night and I plugged it in at 2pm EST. It showed it was charging so I left it and when I got home a while ago, it's at the frozen loading screen. Gonna try thr "battery die" method once more.
  • yo mamma
mine never froze and i have a thirty gig
  • Jason
Update - My 80gb zune froze at the same time as all the 30gb zunes last night. I let my battery run completely dry, and after re-charging, it seems to be back up and running now.
  • Jason
I seriously don't think it's going to be an easy fix, since the reset doesn't work, and the Zune won't recognize a PC when you try to synch. What could microsoft possibly have us do, rather than drop it from a tall building?

I predict a massive recall, or some sort of "coupon" to return your zune where you purchased it.
  • Guttaboi20
yup....it works.......UNTIL NEXT TIME....Ill SEE U GUYS LATER NEXT MONTH PERHAPS?? LOL
  • Anton
Mines up and and running, i let the battery die, and then plugged it into my computer today and it charged and now it synced and its up and playing music. Its just the date, let it die and sync today and your zune is back.
  • sara
    this is so messed up
mine stopped working and the battery died within like two hours which is very strange because it usually lasts for like 8
and then when i tried to plug it in again all it did was freeze up
    this blooooows
  • sean
My zune is stil froze at 3 am. I cant even sync it with my pc to reset it like MS said. I think this is just a part of planned obsoluteness(crash all 30gb and make the owners pay for new ones).
  • Stalls71
The guy who said "Let’s sue microsoft for it.And in return we want a ipod touch for free.Or at least a first generation ipod cause i never heard of a ipod crashing!!!!!!!!!!" or the guy who said "on here theres six pages of people with dead zunes. mine is dead too. The Zune is a nightmare, boycott Microsoft everyone! I hope someone sues them for this trash they put out." are morons. Sueing micrsoft is gonna do nothing for ya. And somehow i doubt Microsoft will reimburse you with an Ipod Touch. People who can't think shouldn't embarrass themselves by speaking

So, I'm one of the many stuck with a 30g brick of pure uselessness at the moment- and though many of my fellow Zuners are wondering "How do I fix it?" I'm wondering,
"Why did this happen in the first place?"

I think it has something to do with the government.
    but that's just me.
  • Jrod
Unplugging the battery worked. Took me five minutes after I read this site. You just need a mini phllips (cross) screw driver.

For the person whos lock button doesnt work. When re-attaching the shell you have to be careful to match up the exterior lock button with the internal one. The outer can slide back and forth when its off. I would take it appart and attach again being careful of mathcing them up.
  • Jordan!
Okay. It doesn't freaking work if you run the freaking battery down. I am so angery.
    *breaths*
Zune better freaking fix it, or i'm getting an ipod!
    lol.

    sorry...
  • IPOD user
Why the "F" doews it need a real time clock in an MP3 player to begin with. Is it going to bill you by the hour? Does it self destruct after a certain time. Oh! it did self destruct, my bad.
  • marc
Mine is also bricked. I'm going to let the battery die and see if it works tomorrow like MS says it will. I believe they are telling people that it should work after noon GMT time tomorrow. I'm going to be pissed if I have the zune logo burnt into the LCD screen.
  • xaine5150
Just went to the zune support site. there is an article up about this, apparently you just let the battery die and then plug it in after noon GMT 1 January 2009. That's about 4a.m. for those on the west coast probably a little later for those living further east.
Basically, the problem should be solved by the time that we stagger out of bed after a night of partying and socializing with everyone else.
A link to the support site is below

my zune was also stuck this morning dec. 31st, but after i reset it by opening it and unplugging the battery, now it's stuck on the lock position.
  • JDL
First my XBox 360, EI has a security flaw...now my Zune is out for the new year. Thanks MS, I can't wait to see what Windows Mobile 6.5 brings as well as Windows 7...Happy New Year.

Relax Bill...they have everything under control.

    Thank Goodness I'm a PC!!!!
  • JDL
Count me in my Zune is dead.
  • goev
This just happened to my Zune....and funny/ironic that today I read a book about hacking and tech surveillance.
  • TY
Mine froze this morning and Im just getting home. I went inside of it and unplugged the battery for a few minutes and it seems to be working fine but I haven't hooked it back up to the pc yet.
  • mackro mackro
OK, I'm usually the last person to say "I told you so"...

..but apparently this is, indeed, a LEAP YEAR bug.

And I was just speculating that as a joke.
  • Mike
ok this happened this morning and time dragged on till I could get home to fix my precious Zune. Now I'm really disappointed because I've told everyone I know that has an Ipod that they suck....Who sucks now? GREAT JOB MICROSOFT!
  • Amit
I guess its something to do with 31st Dec 2008. Programmers @ microsoft have screwed big time
  • cassandra
well i suggest not touching it in case u screw it up even more. plus, the warranty does go away if u accidentally break it. it'll probably be fixed by tomorrow since this is a mishap because of the end of the year. im just gonna wait. it wont kill u to wait :)

and btw, ipods do suck ass. they freeze all the time. bullshit they dont freeze
  • Nick
Ok, this happened to me this morning...And I just saw something on the news about how we have to add an extra second or something today. Think that has anything to do with it? If not, I wouldn't be surprised because Microsoft is notorious for first gen fuck ups...

Also like Xaurudame said, letting the battery out doesn't work. (At least for me it didn't)
  • al bee
holy crap some of you are getting pissed over something so sily lol
  • NOTICE: this just happened as i wrote my last message. The battery died earlier and i just plugged it in to my pc to charge. The Zune turned on and it got stuck again! OUCH! Don't let ur battery die guys or get ready to keep unplugging that battery!

Again, good luck to you all!
  • Man lemme tell you, my Zune is my music for parties and getting ready for a party today and having the Zune get stuff was no cake!

As others said the letting the battery die doesn't work, but I managed to open it up, disconnect the battery and all worked.

Word of advice: keep an eye on the battery cable. For those not tech-savy enough to figure it out when the cable pops loose on you. I was afraid at first to open it up, but it worked and wasnot as bad as I thought.

I wonder if it will happen again tomorrow? =)

    Good luck to all.
  • Mario
I took mine apart and then it started back up but now the lock is stuck on and i can't do anything about it. the button is fine but the device stays locked. I've unplugged and replugged the battery multiple times and also rebooted it many times as well and still can't get it off lock. Will this ever go away?
