Z-Day Hits Zune 30s

zune_latest_range1 In a story that is all over the net already, it appears a strange malady is hitting many if not all first generation Zune 30s. At some point on Dec 31 (no word if there is a specific time that is most common or if the time is even relevant), they are resetting and then freezing up with the progress bar stuck at full, becoming immediate bricks. The Zune cannot be hard reset from the Zunepad as it is locked up so you are left with a Zune logo glowing on a doorstop. There is a process for cracking it open and manually resetting it by breaking and restoring the connection to the battery that is making it’s way through the Zune fanboy forums, but just reading it made me wince and want to cross my legs. Some people are also saying letting the battery drain completely may also solve the problem but no confirmation on that.

No idea how or why this is happening…but it is now pretty clear that it may be one of the most comprehensive and widespread tech snafus ever.

For now, all those people affected can do is wait for MS to come up with a fix once the New Years holiday is passed. Needless to say, this is another blackeye for MS in the MP3 market and a massive headache for Microsoft’s skeleton support staff stuck covering the holiday. Sorry guys.

On the bright side (beyond the fact that my Zune 80 is running fine), for the first time in forever Zune has the top 4 Google search spots, with Zune frozen, reset Zune, Zune locked up and Zune troubleshooting.

Sigh.

(Thanks to Andrew Girdwood for the Google info)

    Ummmm….yeah.

Yep, my zune is screwed and it happened this morning.

on here theres six pages of people with dead zunes. mine is dead too. The Zune is a nightmare, boycott Microsoft everyone! I hope someone sues them for this trash they put out.

  • mackro mackro

So, did someone forget to calculate leap years in the embedded hardware programming?

  • Cookie

My 30GB Halo 3 edition Zune is dead too. Now I’m stuck in Afghanistan with no music on top of all the other crap I have to deal with. MS better get this fixed or they’re gonna have one disgruntled veteran to deal with… It’s bad enough that the software sucks and the fact that it isn’t “drag and drop” like my last MP3 player but now the dang thing just quits?

Oh and letting the battery die doesn’t help at all.

  • AZsoul

remove the little plastic piece around the bottom cable connector, then remove the two small screws, then try to fit your fingernails in between the two halves of the zune case and pry apart (start on the lower half and work your way up. disconnect the battery cable, wait about a minute, reconnect. Back in business. DO NOT SYNC until tomorrow to avoid the 366th day that the Zune does not understand.

  • willy t

Yep,mine too. I thought it was just mine, but glad I found this sight. Odd that they all freeze on the same day.
Up until now I have loved my Zune. Is there a fix?

  • http://www.MobilitySite.com Zealot

I find it very interesting that people are reporting devices that are on suddenly reseting spontaneously then locking up.

It must be due to some kind of housekeeping daemon that runs on the last day of the calendar year which can’t complete (the leap year issue is a good possibily…isn’t there a leap second next year too?). What that daemon is supposed to do would be another mystery. Contact the mothership perhaps? Does anyone else hear Jeff Goldblum saying “It’s…ummm..well….it’s…umm..a countdown!”

The good part of it being this widespread is that MS should have a fix out doublequick…right?

    …right?

    Z

  • doogald

I wonder if anybody has tried the battery disconnect fix and then postdated their PC to tomorrow to see if it works fine?

  • http://NTICompassInc.com NTICompasss

I wish I would have found this out before today. I just turned my Zune on, and yup it’s frozen on the logo screen with a full progress bar. My Zune is a refurbished one from Woot.com.

  • http://www.MobilitySite.com Zealot

    Doogald…

A good question, but it is doing it to devices without syncing, appaently. Therefore it is dependent on the devices internal clock. Does the Zune clock synchronise with the PC during sync?

  • http://www.MobilitySite.com Zealot

    NTI…

I bet a bunch of MS support workers are saying that exact thing right now.

  • Josh

I did what AZsoul did i took it apart and unplugged the battery and waited 10-15 secs and it worked. I let the battery die to see if it would reset but it didnt so i had to plug it back in to see if it worked after i took the battery out and i let it sync by accident it was fine so thank god for AZsoul on here i was like wow fisrt my 360 gets the rrod then my zune errrgghhh i was fustrated so thanks AZsoul for your help

  • sarabelle

Unpluggin the battery worked! You just have to have access to a very tiny screwdriver. Thanks!

  • Kevin Stovall

My Zune 30 locked on Dec 31, 2008 (today). It has the Zune screen and status bar but will not respond. What can I do to fix it????

  • Prattster

my family has 4 of the 30gb’s and they are all locked up. I have tried disconnecting the battery and it stuck at the same boot screen :-(

I do think its interesting that people are posting that the zune sucks….didnt THEY buy the one they have? :-)

I still love my Zune (well not right now but you know what I mean). I also upgraded my drive to a 120GB drive and have always liked the software interface.

I looked at switching to the IPOD touch but the capacity is still too small for the price…

  • Christin

    > .>
Sounds like a conspiracy to me

  • val

My zune froze without synching, it has to be the internal clock.

  • Muse

Unhooking the battery works! Youtube has a good video on how to saftely open your zune. Happy New Years!

  • justin

holy shit it happened to me last night. I was using it an i had to reset it and it just stopped working. Yes its stuck on the loading screen. I cant even call zune its all automated WHAT BULLSHIT!! they must all be fucked up now.

  • Jimi

Mine is messed up too… I thought that if the battery ran out it would reset, but it didn’t. Its still messed up even after battery drained… :(

  • Rahim

Yes taking it apart was easy and it worked thanks can’t live without my music!!

  • Kari

pretty crazy stuff going on, but hey I popped the Zune open pulled out the battery, then put it back in. Closed it up and plugged it into the charger and… it worked!! (go to youtube and search for how to take out zune battery) its so nice to have my zune back. MS has a wurl-wind of troubles comin.

  • Chrystal

AZsoul, how do you get the little piece of plastic off?

  • Jenna

Mine froze at exactly 12:00 pacific time. I let my battery drain, but when I set up my charger USB, it is still stuck. Pure bullshit. I’ll be switching MP3 players with the coming paycheck.

  • musicpebbles

Me too, This is crazy – I’m switching to IPOD

  • Nelly

    This is b.s.

  • Nelly

And guys for the record letting the battery die Doesn’t Work Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

  • zune is a piece of shit

my wifes zune 30gig is doa as well-stuck on the loading screen that says “zune”.What a piece of shit-why is it that my 99 dollar best buy made “insignia” can be used so easily by drag and drop rather than being forced to use microsoft’s “zune” software which is complicated and full of quirks

  • Blake

One more reason not to rely on technology.

A CD player and CDs would never do this.

If you can’t figure out what 5 or so CDs you want to take with you, then you are too picky and are not a true fan of the band. You are supposed to like a band for their entire collection, not just a song or two.

  • Nyrin

GG!! i tried calling custy support, as you try to talk to an “agent” it says “you call did not go through, try you call again later” then it hangs up on you…

  • Hougy

You must be kidding, I thought I was the only one with this issue until I looked it up just now. A multi BILLION dollar company cannot prevent a dinky issue like this for one of their first products that isn’t even 5 years old!? It’s not like this is the first leap year mankind has had! Is this a lame marketing gimmic to upgrade to a new one? OUTRAGE! Now they have more on their hands, as people will open their Zunes to do the battery reset and have the possibility of f-ing the Zune up! How are they going to compensate for THAT!?

As if the software wasn’t bad enough (Why the hell does it show different album and song information on some of the songs I got!?) Getting the crap to Sync right is another challenge!

M$ better get their shit together for the 30 GB folks, fast. They can make everything all pretty with the new clock (that took over 2 years to put on) and Games, but when it comes down to it…STABILITY is always the main issue! If they don’t fix this within 3 days, I will look for a different MP3 player and use the Zune as a fancy paper weight.

Cripes…how many leap years have we had since the calendar was invented? Honestly, it’s nothing new and is announced WELL ahead of time. Bunch of amateurs with major paychecks, someone needs to get fired for this f-up.

  • Supa (atl/nyc)

This is halarious im so pissed im laughing here i was thinking out of the box and not getting an ipod like the rest of the world….. When i stop laughing there time is up I NEED SOME ANSWERS NOW~!

  • allenhurst319

Everyone is at a loss. But I have a theory:

This was supposed to be a huge ad campaign for the new “Day the Earth Stood Still” movie. But in classic MS fashion, they not only screwed up the software, but also released it late.

    ;-)

    * sigh *

    :(

  • Alex

Happened to me exactly at midnight when i was listening to my Zune 30. Was wondering why it happened. At least it’s good to know that I’m not alone on this =)

  • Guttaboi20

IM JUST GLAD TO KNOW IM NOT DA ONLY PERSON WITH DIS PROBLEM….I GUESS ILL CHECK BACK ON THIS SITE UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED, LUCKLY I PURCHASED A 8 GIG ZUNE A FEW MONTHS AGO SINCE MY 30 GIG ZUNE HAS HAD A “BAD” 2008.

*JUST IMAGINE THE PPL WHO JUST GOT A 30 GIG FOR CHRISTMAS….SHAME

  • LunarFlame17

Geez, is this really worth getting freaked out about? I mean, yeah it sucks. But Microsoft would be stupid to not fix the problem as soon as possible. I just don’t see any point in going on a huge rant and claiming that you’re going to go right out and buy an iPod instead (because nobody has ever had a problem with an iPod right? They’re just absolutely perfect). People’s reaction to this just seems excessive to me.

On a somewhat different note, it’s interesting to me that this problem only affects the Zune 30. (I can vouch for this personally because I have two 30s, both bricked, and an 8 and an 80, both of which are working perfectly.) I mean, it can’t be a firmware problem, because all Zune models use the same firmware. Heck, this may not even be Microsoft’s fault, come to think of it. The Zune 30 was actually manufactured by Toshiba, not Microsoft. If it is a hardware problem, then that would make it Toshiba’s fault. So that’s something else to think about for you people throwing MS under the bus here.

  • http://strickerin.blogspot.com/ Lisa

I still love my Zune. Even if it is a brick.

I have had 18 months of very regular use and have never had any problems until now.

  • Greg

Wow, some of you people need to take your meds. Seriously.

I am certain MS will patch the error with leap year processing. All of you people ranting and raving, demanding financial compensation for not having a music player for 24 hours…let me know how that works out for you…

  • Cyndi

My husband’s Zune is also locked up. After being on hold for approximately 50 minutes, I finally got to a live agent. His only response was that he also owns the 30 Zune and it is EVERY 30 GIG ZUNE. Not just a few…ALL OF THEM. He said that Microsoft is trying to find a solution as quickly as possible. The current instructions are… Let your battery run completely dead, wait 24 hours, and check the Zune.net website or attempt to call back (877-get-zune(877-438-9863)) and see if there is an available update at that time (1:30 pm Eastern). It is NOT RECOMMENDED that you take the Zune apart to reset the battery. Once it syncs again, it will lock up again.

  • Aztek

Let’s sue microsoft for it.And in return we want a ipod touch for free.Or at least a first generation ipod cause i never heard of a ipod crashing!!!!!!!!!!

  • Xaurudame

Letting the battery drain DOES NOT WORK, I have tried this and when the battery got charged to the point where the zune would turn on, it froze again.

  • cheetos

My Zune 30 locked up last night and like everyone elses, is still locked up. If the matter is not resolved by next week, I will be going back to my I-pod. I switched b/c there were some features that I really enjoyed about the Zune. I am truly dependent on it now (what would we do w/o mp3s and cells?!). For what it is worth, I DID NOT have these sort of issues with my I-Pod.

  • nex

you do know that breaking open your zune does void the warranty right?

  • Matt

This can be fixed if you have enough patience. A #0 Philips screwdriver and a razor blade. Go here:

    http://www.rapidrepair.com/guides/zune/zuneassemblyguide.htm

Once you remove the hard drive and battery, just put the Zune back together and your Zune should be back to working order.

  • Mario

I took mine apart and then it started back up but now the lock is stuck on and i can’t do anything about it. the button is fine but the device stays locked. I’ve unplugged and replugged the battery multiple times and also rebooted it many times as well and still can’t get it off lock. Will this ever go away?

  • http://www.rolyrolls.com RolYroLLs

Man lemme tell you, my Zune is my music for parties and getting ready for a party today and having the Zune get stuff was no cake!

As others said the letting the battery die doesn’t work, but I managed to open it up, disconnect the battery and all worked.

Word of advice: keep an eye on the battery cable. For those not tech-savy enough to figure it out when the cable pops loose on you. I was afraid at first to open it up, but it worked and wasnot as bad as I thought.

I wonder if it will happen again tomorrow? =)

    Good luck to all.

  • http://www.rolyrolls.com RolYroLLs

NOTICE: this just happened as i wrote my last message. The battery died earlier and i just plugged it in to my pc to charge. The Zune turned on and it got stuck again! OUCH! Don’t let ur battery die guys or get ready to keep unplugging that battery!

Again, good luck to you all!

  • al bee

holy crap some of you are getting pissed over something so sily lol

  • Nick

Ok, this happened to me this morning…And I just saw something on the news about how we have to add an extra second or something today. Think that has anything to do with it? If not, I wouldn’t be surprised because Microsoft is notorious for first gen fuck ups…

Also like Xaurudame said, letting the battery out doesn’t work. (At least for me it didn’t)

  • http://twitter.com/benberg/status/ Benoit Bergeret

Tech support worst nightmare: http://bit.ly/1Cp0ia. Let’s have a cheer for them “skeleton crew” Holidays tech support at MS! #zune

  • cassandra

well i suggest not touching it in case u screw it up even more. plus, the warranty does go away if u accidentally break it. it’ll probably be fixed by tomorrow since this is a mishap because of the end of the year. im just gonna wait. it wont kill u to wait :)

and btw, ipods do suck ass. they freeze all the time. bullshit they dont freeze

  • Amit

I guess its something to do with 31st Dec 2008. Programmers @ microsoft have screwed big time

  • Mike

ok this happened this morning and time dragged on till I could get home to fix my precious Zune. Now I’m really disappointed because I’ve told everyone I know that has an Ipod that they suck….Who sucks now? GREAT JOB MICROSOFT!

  • mackro mackro

OK, I’m usually the last person to say “I told you so”…

..but apparently this is, indeed, a LEAP YEAR bug.

And I was just speculating that as a joke.

  • TY

Mine froze this morning and Im just getting home. I went inside of it and unplugged the battery for a few minutes and it seems to be working fine but I haven’t hooked it back up to the pc yet.

  • goev

This just happened to my Zune….and funny/ironic that today I read a book about hacking and tech surveillance.

  • JDL

Count me in my Zune is dead.

  • JDL

First my XBox 360, EI has a security flaw…now my Zune is out for the new year. Thanks MS, I can’t wait to see what Windows Mobile 6.5 brings as well as Windows 7…Happy New Year.

Relax Bill…they have everything under control.

    Thank Goodness I’m a PC!!!!

  • OSCARINOXNARD

my zune was also stuck this morning dec. 31st, but after i reset it by opening it and unplugging the battery, now it’s stuck on the lock position.

  • xaine5150

Just went to the zune support site. there is an article up about this, apparently you just let the battery die and then plug it in after noon GMT 1 January 2009. That’s about 4a.m. for those on the west coast probably a little later for those living further east.
Basically, the problem should be solved by the time that we stagger out of bed after a night of partying and socializing with everyone else.
A link to the support site is below

    http://www.zune.net/en-us/support/zune30.htm

  • marc

Mine is also bricked. I’m going to let the battery die and see if it works tomorrow like MS says it will. I believe they are telling people that it should work after noon GMT time tomorrow. I’m going to be pissed if I have the zune logo burnt into the LCD screen.

  • IPOD user

Why the “F” doews it need a real time clock in an MP3 player to begin with. Is it going to bill you by the hour? Does it self destruct after a certain time. Oh! it did self destruct, my bad.

  • Jordan!

Okay. It doesn’t freaking work if you run the freaking battery down. I am so angery.
    *breaths*
Zune better freaking fix it, or i’m getting an ipod!
    lol.

    sorry…

  • Jrod

Unplugging the battery worked. Took me five minutes after I read this site. You just need a mini phllips (cross) screw driver.

For the person whos lock button doesnt work. When re-attaching the shell you have to be careful to match up the exterior lock button with the internal one. The outer can slide back and forth when its off. I would take it appart and attach again being careful of mathcing them up.

  • Tortilinie

So, I’m one of the many stuck with a 30g brick of pure uselessness at the moment- and though many of my fellow Zuners are wondering “How do I fix it?” I’m wondering,
“Why did this happen in the first place?”

I think it has something to do with the government.
    but that’s just me.

  • Stalls71

The guy who said “Let’s sue microsoft for it.And in return we want a ipod touch for free.Or at least a first generation ipod cause i never heard of a ipod crashing!!!!!!!!!!” or the guy who said “on here theres six pages of people with dead zunes. mine is dead too. The Zune is a nightmare, boycott Microsoft everyone! I hope someone sues them for this trash they put out.” are morons. Sueing micrsoft is gonna do nothing for ya. And somehow i doubt Microsoft will reimburse you with an Ipod Touch. People who can’t think shouldn’t embarrass themselves by speaking

  • sean

My zune is stil froze at 3 am. I cant even sync it with my pc to reset it like MS said. I think this is just a part of planned obsoluteness(crash all 30gb and make the owners pay for new ones).

  • sara

    this is so messed up
mine stopped working and the battery died within like two hours which is very strange because it usually lasts for like 8
and then when i tried to plug it in again all it did was freeze up
    this blooooows

  • Anton

Mines up and and running, i let the battery die, and then plugged it into my computer today and it charged and now it synced and its up and playing music. Its just the date, let it die and sync today and your zune is back.

  • Guttaboi20

yup….it works…….UNTIL NEXT TIME….Ill SEE U GUYS LATER NEXT MONTH PERHAPS?? LOL

  • Jason

I seriously don’t think it’s going to be an easy fix, since the reset doesn’t work, and the Zune won’t recognize a PC when you try to synch. What could microsoft possibly have us do, rather than drop it from a tall building?

I predict a massive recall, or some sort of “coupon” to return your zune where you purchased it.

  • Jason

Update – My 80gb zune froze at the same time as all the 30gb zunes last night. I let my battery run completely dry, and after re-charging, it seems to be back up and running now.

  • yo mamma

mine never froze and i have a thirty gig

  • http://www.rolyrolls.com RoLYroLLs

Well well. Glad to see someof you have gotten your Zunes back, but mine is still frozen. I let the Zune battery die last night and I plugged it in at 2pm EST. It showed it was charging so I left it and when I got home a while ago, it’s at the frozen loading screen. Gonna try thr “battery die” method once more.

  • http://www.rolyrolls.com RoLYroLLs

Well, looks like mine has become a real brick! It will not boot up. I let the battery drain on Saturday night and today Monday morning I connected it to my PC. When it charged just enough to boot, it started just fine. Then it reset, and got stuck. It’s been doing that since Jan 1st. I’ve tried doing it a few minutes after the battery gets drained, I’ve also tried a few hours, and I just finished trying a lil more than 24 hrs. Ugh!
