windows-mobile-logo With the iPhone 3G selling strong, Android hitting the market, users complaining that WinMo has lost it’s edge, and any other hurdle facing Windows Mobile, 20 Million Handsets setill sold last year. Can you believe it? To be honest, I can’t. I am amazed at this number really. Can Windows Mobile rebound in the future?

“The numbers are in for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile sales in 2008 and according to Steve Balmer’s keynote at CES, they sold some 20 million sets running Windows last year. It will be interesting to see how they fare this year as the competition keeps growing with Android, WebOS, Palm’s Pre, and of course iPhone. We have to tell ya though, with HTC leading the charge with a never ending flow of sweet sets, Windows Mobile will likely stay competitive throughout his year. We’ve no clue what hardware’s going to win this war, but we are sure that we’ll hear all the Rah Rah Sis Boom Bah when they do.”

I was just looking back at Gartner's results for Q3 2008, which was posted in early December, and they had 36.5 million smartphones total for the quarter, with 11.1% Windows Mobile - fourth behind Symbian, Blackberry, and OS X - or 4 million for the quarter. Growth was falling each of the first three quarters, and WM share had fallen 3%.

Based on this, based on the poor global economy, based on the fact that we'll have a full year of Android and webOS - they may limp in at 20 million if they reach the number at all. I know that in December I am leaving WM and going with something else, so I am one lost statistic.
  • Combined with the recent competition from Android and now Palm, plus the iPhone's continuing popularity and Microsoft supposedly cutting back on the number of handsets, I think selling 20 million this year will be tough -- unless WM 6.5 is more than people are expecting.

They'll need to sell more units of each handset in the face of some tough competition. I hope they can pull it off, but I'll be surprised if they move 20 million again in 2009.
