I was just looking back at Gartner's results for Q3 2008, which was posted in early December, and they had 36.5 million smartphones total for the quarter, with 11.1% Windows Mobile - fourth behind Symbian, Blackberry, and OS X - or 4 million for the quarter. Growth was falling each of the first three quarters, and WM share had fallen 3%.

Based on this, based on the poor global economy, based on the fact that we'll have a full year of Android and webOS - they may limp in at 20 million if they reach the number at all. I know that in December I am leaving WM and going with something else, so I am one lost statistic.

Combined with the recent competition from Android and now Palm, plus the iPhone's continuing popularity and Microsoft supposedly cutting back on the number of handsets, I think selling 20 million this year will be tough -- unless WM 6.5 is more than people are expecting.

They'll need to sell more units of each handset in the face of some tough competition. I hope they can pull it off, but I'll be surprised if they move 20 million again in 2009.
