Smarter to be Lucky?

krusell Krusell, one of my favorite producers of quality cases for mobile devices (I swear by their iPod Touch case), just released their list of 10 top selling phone cases for 2008. They release a similar list every year which are usually a good barometer not only for which phones are selling well, but which ones are being heavily used in the field. As the company sells to the global market, it is also a good way to look beyond the limits of country or region and look at the big picture…so what IS the big picture for 2008?

The list is based upon the number of pieces of model specific mobile- and smart phone cases that have been ordered from Krusell during 2008. Krusell’s list is unique due to the fact that it reflects the sales of phones on six continents and in more than 50 countries around the globe.

  1. (-) Apple iPhone
  2. (-) Nokia 3109
  3. (2) Nokia 6300
  4. (-) Nokia E51
  5. (-) HTC Diamond
  6. (-) Nokia N95 8GB
  7. (-) Sony Ericsson K800i
  8. (-) Sony Ericsson C702
  9. (-) Sony Ericsson K850i
  10. (-) Sony Ericsson K530i

() = last year’s position.

We all tend to be obsessed with smartphones here at MobilitySite, but this kind of list gives us a reminder of what phones people actually use the most….only three true “smartphones” on this list, the iPhone, the WinMo HTC Diamond and the Symbian N95. The rest are Series 40 Nokia feature phones and Sony camera phones. Also notable, no sign of a Blackberry, which reflects the fact that their dominance in the US Enterprise market does not transfer cleanly to Europe and Asia. It also shows how cyclical and hype-driven the industry can be, as only one of this year’s top sellers even made the list in 2007.

So much for smartphones, smashed by feature phones 7 to 3…perhaps the old adage that it is smarter to be lucky then it is lucky to be smart is true.
