Google Sync Beta for iPhone and WinMo

closeThis post was published 9 months 18 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

Now this is huge. One of the main issues with other devices was the data conversion from Window Mobile to their OS. Now that’s all about to change. Wake up Microsoft, Google is invading the world while you are asleep.

Google has announced a beta for Windows Mobile and iPhone. They already have a Blackberry version as well.

One of the hardest parts about switching phones is getting your address book and calendar to your new device. We’re making that process a little easier by releasing a beta version of Google Sync for the iPhone and Windows Mobile phones as well as a contacts-only version for phones that support SyncML.

  • @Chris:

Wake up Microsoft, Google is invading the world while you are asleep.

I think Microsoft knows about this. From what I've read, it sounds like they've licensed ActiveSync to Google (and the Support Code 0×80004005 that Matt got, which looks suspiciously like the wonderful ActiveSync errors, seems to confirm that).

Set it up on my iPhone last night and I have to say I'm super happy with it. I already had all my contacts on gmail so this works great for me.
  • Being the Guinea pig that I always seem to be, I set this up on my Touch Diamond and the results were, well, disasterous.

    Contacts:
All of my (700+) contacts have been changed to display Last, First, whereas I had them set to First, Last. Wonderful.
I also ended up with quite a few duplicates, AND (this is the most irritating part), since the Contacts fields are not exactly the same between Windows Mobile and Google, many of the contacts where I had numerous email addresses are all jacked up. I now have addresses like this address1@xxx.com :: address2@xyz.com :: address3@abc.com inside of ONE email field!

    Calendar:
Calendar wouldn't sync right at all. It took hours, then errored out with Support Code 0x80004005 - "Synchronization cannot be completed successfully because of a mobile device software error. Contact your network administrator."

GooSync was working great for me. I am restoring from Spb Backup to the way my PIM information was yesterday, and going back to using GooSync until I can try MyPhone when Microsoft opens it up for trial...
