OK, so I haven’t fallen out of love with Mobile Tech, but I have been lulled lately. I have ranted on here about how we are using the same old technology over and over again in all these new devices. Sure, there has been some software developments, but we haven’t really seen anything change, hardware wise, in quite some time. This will all change with the Toshiba TG01.

Enter the 1st Snapdragon powered Windows Mobile Phone. What is Snapdragon? This is a new processor from Qualcomm that is supposed to be running at 1ghz. Put this up against these 400 – 624 mhz chips that we’ve been using over and over again. Nice. This power coupled with their claim of better battery life and we may have a winner. Learn more about this processor here.

The Toshiba TG01 was announced in London today and boasts a 4.1-inch 800×480 WVGA touchscreen, HSDPA, GPS, WiFi, and custom UI from Toshiba.

It was interesting to note that the Qualcom Snapdragon page at http://www.qctconnect.com/products/snapdragon.html on the "related" side links under WLAN seems to be one of the first to boast 802.11n abilities. Which in itself has become a hansblixing circus at IEEEE. What, 5 years now they have screwed around? 802.11 is obsolete and still hung on a coat peg. It was in my opinion refreshing to see someone just pick a starting point and jump in.

Other features mentioned were GPSone? Really I would have to look at that one a little closer. Im using a herm100 8525 with external gps locator and I do find it a simple process to gag at the GPS options. The most feasable to date has been a $35.00 (used) tomtom navigator 5 software package which has some annoying hassles involved with it also (call for activation annoyance). The GPSone claims seem to say all the standard stuff and some extras. The extras I wonder about. Another twenty bucks a month for some flaky out of date crap info from AT&T is not viable in my opinion.

The cross band modemabilities looked like a sensible permutation.

Linux and windblows. Is wind-mo-bill 7 going to be something functional? Linux? Perhaps someone from Serius B will penguinate their phone?

And semi serious graphics for a change. Marvelous. Does it come with a pico projector and or external video out jack?

An interesting platform. It will be interesting to see what HTC plugs into it. What the various sellers of air time allow to be operable. Thinking of the AT&T phones that had qualcom GPS chips on the board but were disabled. It will be an interesting year. Will Intel, AMD, Nvidia expand their interests in small devices?

Serious CPU and GPU along with realistic SSD are stimulating. It would be nice to see.
  • The phone looks beautiful if a bit iPhonish, but what really has me excited is Snapdragon. This chip has the power to shake up the "Superphone"/MID market tht way the Atom transformed Netbooks.

I had nearly given it up as Vapourwear, it is great to see it being used.

As CodeBubba and Heybhouse ask, the price will make a big difference -- and who will carry it? This device looks so sweet. It's been a while since we have seen anything to excite mobile users. I found some excitement and then found $800 price points and carriers who don't have a presence. It does look good and I am ready for a new toy. My phone remains an LG Dare (beautiful, really), but I need to carry my Axim in my purse and my Lenovo S10 in my briefcase. Talk of one device has been around a long time, let us see one, feel it and use it for a while.

  • It looks very nice, but there are a couple of questions I have.

First, what's up with Windows Mobile 6.1? Wouldn't this be a great platform for WM 6.5?

Second, at the end of video, he sort of held the device in landscape mode, but it didn't switch to landscape orientation. I wonder if the device doesn't have a gravity sensor.

the real question is the price.

Yeah I'm also feeling the phone...though the 4.1" screen makes me wonder how big the device is, cause the Touch HD has a 3.8" screen which took up almost the whole face of the device and made it about the size of an iPhone, I'm not sure going bigger than either of those devices is great.

All that being said I really like what I saw of it, the interface they added on for the today screen would be turned off if I owned the device though.

Any idea what the price point will be?
  • It will be interedting to see more about this device ... damn, it looks nice!
