Oops, my link didn't work (and the dream isn't realized yet anyway). Nuance does mobile voice recognition, but doesn't seem to handle tasks and appointments yet.

@rabilancia:

In case you’ve not tried Jott before, Jott is an application “in the cloud” that allows you to “capture thoughts, create to-dos and set reminders
with a simple phone call.”

Does Recite actually require connectivity? I haven't tried turning off my radio, but as far as I can tell, it seems to just run locally.

If that's true, it may not be as much competition for Jott. That doesn't mean that it's not useful, of course.

@Matt:

I love how they are maximizing the use of their voice recognition engine[....]

The problem I have with Recite is that they aren't maximizing its use. For example, if they're truly recognizing the words used, they should also be able to display a line of text in each note to help jog your memory what the notes are about. Instead, they just show the date and time it was record, requiring you to either remember when you recorded each item or play them all back.

If they're doing something different, like just comparing the waveform of your original note with the waveform of the search query, I'm not sure I'd call that true voice recognition, and that would make your dream of creating tasks and appointments by voice farther off.

However, your dream may already be realized. Check out Nuance.

@Steve

Works great, but how do you delete unwanted/old recordings?

To clarify what rabilancia said, select the note you want using the directional pad, then go right to select the tiny delete icon ("X") and press OK. You'll be prompted to ensure you really want to delete the note.

Steve,

According to Benjamin Gauthey, "It [Recite] is not touch enabled, you have to use your pad to delete items."

Hope this helps.

I love how they are maximizing the use of their voice recognition engine (same one as in Live Search [800-CALL-411] I would presume). It is scarily accurate, provided you are speaking in a quiet environment!
One shortcoming of this app (vs. JOTT) - there are no reminder features. While it is incredibly powerful to be able to voice search for certain notes, I wish it had a reminder feature. Perhaps we'll see that down the line - heck, this is only a tech preview anyway! I'm sure they're going to receive all sorts of feedback that they'll take back to the developers!

I'm going to make a prediction that shorly we'll see the ability to create Tasks and Appointments by talking to our devices, using this same voice recognition engine, and that will be WAY cool!

Free is cool (I don't know how some do it for so long though) and this looks useful, but I think my PhatNotes app does the same (talk about expensive), but I know your irritation with Jott going to fees. However, it's very very cool to make one call and enter a whole boat load of notes to Expenser or a whole growing list of other services that enter lists and report data i'm going to need later. I haven't decided yet which I like more, but as my phone fills up with individual little apps (like this one) and start to run out of memory, sometimes I'm just as glad to have some applications "off shore".
