More Views of the Pre

I discovered the following Mobile Divide video of the Pre being demoed by Peter Skillman, Palm’s VP of Design, courtesy of our good friends over at jkOnTheRun.

I am tremendously impressed by the Pre as it is shown here. The GUI is smooth and powerful and unique, the hardware looks solidly built and innovative…I really can’t wait to see this phone live. Hopefully whatever multitouch kerfuffle starts up between Apple and Palm over the patent will be short lived or easily settled and we can get down to some real competition between the Pre and the iPhone.

Watch this and you will see what I mean. Just think Gekko Skin.

By day a department manager and writer for a major network device vendor...by night Zealot stalks the mean magnetic streets, striking fear into the hearts of bandwidth abusers and theme park mascots. Zealot has been involved with mobile devices for more than a decade now, starting off with dumb phones, moving to PDAs and then to smartphones, notebooks and netbooks with the odd PMP thrown in. Most of his mobile time currently is spent on a Treo Pro, Zune HD, Thinkpad T61, Gigabyte M912M or a Hackintoshed Compaq Mini 704. He proudly groks the Geek community and considers himself a Neo Maxi Zune Dweebie (thanks Will Wheaton!).

I think that the pronunciation of the vowels should be like Spanish or Italian - the Palm "Pray". Because they are praying that this will be successful.
  • I watched the first few minutes over the weekend. The UI seemed to be a bit laggy starting some of the applications, but that may be because it's not quite finished yet.

As for pricing, if Apple can sell lots of iPhones to fanboys at $600, I hope Palm fanboys can afford $300. :D (I have no idea what the pricing will be.)

It is a nice looking device (but with a stupid name -- Pre what? Pre-maturely named?).

  • For a slider that is one thin device! And you are right about the UI looking nice. I am still worried about them pricing the unit too high, but at least they seem to be getting its bits and pieces right!
