It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

It was about this time last year when we saw the last release of Spb Mobile Shell and with the upcoming Mobile World Congress, we can expect to see the official announcement of the latest release, Mobile Shell 3.0.

Spb Software will offer a sneak preview of the new Spb Mobile Shell 3.0 at Mobile World Congress. This release will set an even higher standard offering the user significantly more than what is available on any phone today.

So what can we expect  too see?  There is a NEW flexible engine for 3D animation, clever Facebook integration, kinetic scrolling, widgets, and multiple usability innovations. Spb Mobile Shell 3.0 will provide a very definite WOW factor as well as a huge amount of flexibility and functionality.

Mobile Shell quickly became a standard when it was first introduced several years ago and users anxiously await each new iteration.  The lastest release is designed to be highly flexible not only for end-users, but also the device manufacturers.  I expect you will start to see it in customized form in a variety of different devices soon to be released.

When can we expect to see it?  According to Spb, the scheduled release to manufacturers will be at the end of this month and the end user can expect to either purchase (or upgrade) sometime in March.

    Thanks .... fixed!
  • Ya, I read the same about 6.5 but obviously that isnt official. Microsoft knows what they need to do with the OS in order to at least catch up to the competition. Lets just see how they do.

Windows 7 sounds like it is going to work hard at being a far more comprehensive OS. If MS can do with RAM on the mobile version of Windows 7 what they have done on the desktop version that would be a great start. But it sounds like MS is saying that WM is going to be FAR more powerful and capable. From their recent patent filings I think MS is going to push the idea of docking your mobile device to have it become the brains of your desktop.

Whatever happens, '09 and '10 should be entertaining. :)
  • @Darren:
Good point about Mobile Shell being useful on 6.1 devices. I guess I might be dreaming to think that everyone will be able to upgrade to 6.5 :D

I wish it were so. ;) As far as I know, there's not even a WM 6.1 upgrade for my WM 6 Standard Verizon Motorola Q9m, even though there is one for the Verizon Q9c.

If 6.5 was only so skin deep it would be a major letdown and MS knows it. I am sure it will go beyond just the today screen, but we will have to see.

I've read that it will implement finger scrolling throughout, but I'm not sure I'd expect a lot. Assuming WM 6.5 is a major UI improvement throughout the system, what would WM 7 have to make it worthy of a new version number?

  • I'm not sure how deeply the finger-friendly part of WM 6.5 runs. However, even if the honeycomb interface is just the Today screen, isn't that basically what Mobile Shell is, too -- an extensive Today screen plug-in that provides access to other applications and, in some cases, replaces parts of the applications?

I've never used Mobile Shell, so I'm not sure how deep it goes. Of course, Mobile Shell might still be useful on WM 6.1 and earlier devices regardless.

  • Wow, gotta say SPB is moving along.

Misspelling: "significantlyy" (in 2nd paragraph, 2nd sentence)--> "significantly"

I can't wait for this. I love SPB products.
  • I most definitely missed something.
  • No worries Darren. No worries. Jack will email you. Conversation of this nature is not needed in our comment threads.
  • Jack, I'm not sure you comment is completely self explanatory...

What a cheesy graphic. However glad that an update is coming out.
  • I don't know what to make of this. Obviously SPB works closely with Microsoft. If WinMo 6.5 is coming out this year with a finger friendly UI it would seem that Mobile Shell 3.0 could have a rather short life. Perhaps there is more in it than WinMo 6.5 will have but there would still be a significant reduction in its appeal with large overlaps.

Perhaps WinMo 6.5 will not be as significant a UI change as first hoped; perhaps that is being mostly saved for WinMo 7. I truly hope not!
