Q2 MSI Wind Netbook Mini Review

The MSI Wind is a small, impressive laptop.  It sports an 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 1 GB ram, 120 GB hard drive, Windows XP home, WiFi B/G and a 10.1″ screen.  It came with a wall charger, and some very meager instructions.  But fortunately it was simple to setup and use.  It is small enough to be very portable, yet large enough to be quite usable.  Lots more photos and info to come…

ScreensSidebySide Here it is next to my Dell Inspiron e1505, which has a 15″ screen

WindOverDell It’s about 3/4″ thick.

Keyboards The keyboard is not as large as that of the Dell, but though it’s a bit tight, it’s very usable.

ScreensSidebySide Screen The screen has a very nice display.  It may be significantly smaller than the Inspiron’s, but the web page is not cut off on the sides.

RightSide The right side has a USB port, and a Card Reader: 4-in-1 (SD,MMC,MS, MS Pro).

LeftSide This side has a couple more USB ports, a vent and the power connection.

This may not be a gamer’s machine, but it’s quite snappy, responsive and easy to use.  It’s solidly built and it’s a bit more heavy than you’d expect, but that inspires confidence.  YouTube videos play well and overall the machine performs without any lags.  I have found it to be a joy to own.  The only negative is the small, 3 cell battery.  A 6 cell may be a better choice.  The best part?  I bought it for a meager $314.99 at Best Buy.  You can’t beat the price.

There is an new, upcoming MSI Wind on the near horizon, so you can delay your purchase for some improvements, such as a bigger trackpad, individual left and right click buttons (as opposed to the rocker switch), a sharper edged design, and a nicer vent design.  But the proc remains the same, as do the keyboard, and the overall size.  Plus the new one should go for a premium over this 1st gen model.  Overall, though welcome, the improvements did not win me over.  The first gen Wind offers an excellent value.

  • Netbooks are a great little laptop with a small price tag that is for sure. What kind of upgrades can you do to them? RAM? HDD?
  • I am thinking about picking up a Acer Aspire ONE A150-1447 this coming weekend. Looks like I can pick one up for around $310-$340 or so, with the standard specs and a 6 cell battery.
I thought about going with one of the 10" models, but I think the 8.9" will be better suited to what I am going to use it for.

Nice screen but lots and lots of trouble with Wifi. I can't get it to connect to my home network and lots of public networks. A toy is really what it is. And with the limited RAM forget streaming video. It hangs up and it disconnects much to often. Very unreliable. Save your money.
  • Steve, nice new toy!

Ya, you should put Windows 7 on it. I have it on my Acer Aspire One and it works like a charm! It runs VERY quickly.

I like the Wind. MSI did a nice job on it.

I am considering one of these. I have a Redfly and use it extensively but sometimes need a laptop. I am told that it runs windows 7 very well too. Thanks for the mini review.
